A message from the Chair…

Once again I have the pleasure to update you on the many Friends events planned for the coming year. It may not seem possible but this year the Friends of Tufts Libraries will top our successful and well-received events last year on Tufts' 150th Anniversary! The Friends will present four, possibly five, Authors Talks, all by well-known authors-two alumni, Christopher Golden, A89, and Anita Shreve, G68, and two faculty, Joseph Hurka and Dr. Nicholas Dodman. See the Calendar of Friends Events in this issue for a list of all events and dates.

In addition, in response to frequent requests, especially of recent graduates who want to continue access to the many electronic databases they used while they were students, the Friends of Tufts Libraries and the Tufts University Alumni Association (TUAA) are working very hard to bring you "The Alumni and Friends Virtual Library" in January 2003. See the box below for more information on this free service for Friends.

Last year, the Friends continued their tradition of contributing significantly to the financial well being of Tufts libraries. From July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002, the Friends raised over $1,386,000 in cash and new commitments to support library acquisitions, operating expenses, library construction, and book endowments. The names of all 254 Friends appear within this newsletter. We are so very grateful for such generous support.

Your continued participation in the life of Tufts libraries benefits everyone associated with Tufts. Thank you for being a Friend!

Coming in January 2003: The Alumni and Friends Virtual Library

Search 70 million pages of articles from newspapers, magazines, trade journals and more—free! One of the many characteristics that distinguish Tufts Friends of the Libraries and alumni is a lifelong love of learning. We know your thirst for knowledge hasn’t vanished. That's why the Friends of Tufts Libraries and the Tufts University Alumni Association (TUAA) are working very hard to bring you a research tool you can use in your career and personal interests. Tufts University is very excited to work with divine, inc. to offer you a 2-year pilot of The Alumni and Friends Virtual Library. This site lets you search and download articles from more than 7,000 publications, including business and trade periodicals, academic and scientific journals, and hundreds of local and regional newspapers. News headlines give you the big picture at a glance, or search the current news database of more than 60 American and international newswires, all updated every two minutes. It is powered by divine's award-winning search engine, formerly available on the Web as Northern Light, which lets you search full-text publications and the Web simultaneously. This lets you access a tremendous array of resources in the same time that it takes to search the Web. Results are grouped by theme to make it easy to find just what you've been searching for. Friends will receive a special mailing before January providing access instructions and more information about The Alumni and Friends Virtual Library. This will be the next step in your journey of lifelong learning. Top of page

News From Tisch Library

The Tisch Library has developed an information literacy program for first year students (piloted in fall 2001 with English I classes), upper-level undergraduates (piloted in spring 2002 with faculty teaching discipline-specific courses), and graduate students (to be piloted fall 2002 with faculty teaching research methodology courses). The goals are to teach students to assess the information needed, to access information efficiently and effectively, to evaluate information and its sources critically, to use information effectively, and to access and use information legally and ethically while they are students and throughout their careers. The program will be revised based on faculty and student feedback.

This past year the Tisch Library significantly increased its collections by adding electronic resources in the humanities and the arts based on faculty focus group feedback. Faculty expressed the desire for the library to provide access to primary source electronic databases so that they can incorporate them into their teaching and into their students' research. Friends donations were used to provide these primary source databases.

A demonstration and dinner was held May 1, 2002, to celebrate the completion of the Mystic Watershed Collaborative Clearinghouse, a Web resource to develop greater awareness and understanding of the important environmental problems in the Mystic watershed as well as to provide links to the numerous research projects conducted by Tufts faculty and students and community-based organizations on various aspects of the watershed. Creation of the website was funded in part with a grant from the Berger Family Technology Transfer Endowment, which is awarded annually to teams of Tisch librarians working with faculty to create digital library products. In addition, the Clearinghouse supports Tufts' goal to help restore the Mystic River to fishable and swimmable conditions by 2010. The website is located @ www.tufts.edu/tie/mwc/resources/about_mwcc.html.

The Tisch Library has been notified of a new bequest entitled the Curtis and Eunice M. Campbell Book Fund established to purchase economics books for the library.

News from Health Sciences Library

On May 31, 2002, Dr. John T. Harrington, Dean of the Medical School, announced the appointment of Eric Albright as the new Health Sciences Library Director, effective August 7, 2002. He joins Tufts with 12 years of library experience at the University of Chicago John Crerar Library, Northwestern University's Galter Health Sciences Library and most recently at Duke University Medical Center Library. He has published two articles and more than 90 reviews in publications such as JAMA, Library Journal and Bulletin of the Medical Library Association. Eric Albright's appointment resulted from a national search that attracted an excellent pool of candidates. As the Health Sciences Library (HSL) Director, Eric will be responsible for overall leadership, administration and program development during a time of rapid and exciting changes in the role of libraries in medical education, research, and practice. Please join us in welcoming Eric and his family to the Tufts community.

Beginning Monday, July 29 through August 30, the Health Sciences Library is undergoing construction to create additional small group study rooms on the 7th floor. The rooms will be used for curriculum support and for open study when not scheduled. The new study rooms are being wired for network connections, Internet access and nomadic computing.

News from Webster Veterinary Library

2003 will mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Webster Veterinary Library, and a number of events are planned to celebrate. Early this summer the library sponsored a Faculty Technology Showcase, featuring academic applications of technology that have been developed by veterinary school faculty. Nineteen workstations in the computer laboratory were set up to demonstrate a wide array of programs, all innovative examples of the uses of technology to enhance the learning experience. Guests and fellow faculty had the opportunity to discuss the programs while indulging in delicious ice cream sundaes. Webster Library staff manage the Grafton campus' Health Sciences Database initiative, the award winning multimedia and digital curricular database, and assist faculty with the uses of other web-based teaching tools. Other library events will include an Information Fair, an Authors Talk, tours during the Veterinary School's annual open house, and a special exhibit from the Seaverns equine book collection.
