Joann Wellner, J63, Chair Friends of Tufts Libraries

A message from the Chair…

I am very happy to update you on library projects, many of them funded by the Friends of Tufts Libraries, as well as tell you about the exciting events planned in the coming year. First, the construction of Level G in Tisch was completed in April thanks to many of you who responded to my $100,000 matching gift challenge. Special thanks to the Class of 1969, who dedicated their reunion gift to Level G, and to many of you, who also gave generously to the project. I have heard many Tisch Library users say that Level G is a wonderfully quiet place to study and that journal research is much easier now that all the volumes of each title are shelved together in a public area.

I recommend each of the three excellent Friends Authors Talks offered this year. The third Parents Weekend Authors Talk will be given by R.A. Salvatore on October 22nd. Bob is the proud parent of Bryan, A07, but he is best known as the author of numerous fantasy adventure books on the New York Times best-seller list. Bob's latest book, The Two Swords, will be published in October right before his Authors Talk. On December 1st, former Provost Sol Gittleman will give the second Friends Authors Talk on his recently completed history of Tufts entitled An Entrepreneurial University: the Transformation of Tufts, 1976-2002. The third Friends Authors Talk will be given by Christopher Castellani, G96, on March 30th. Christopher's bittersweet first novel, A Kiss from Maddalena, has been a runaway best-seller at independent bookstores. In addition, we will inaugurate, jointly with the English Department, the John Holmes Memorial Poetry Reading with the 2004 Pulitzer Prize winner, Frantz Wright, reading his poetry on April 6th. For more details on these Friends events, see the calendar further into this issue.

I am proud to report that the Friends tradition of significant contributions to library collections and services has continued. From July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004, the Friends raised over $1,158,416 in cash and new commitments to support acquisitions, operating expenses, library construction, and book endowments. I thank each of the 256 Friends listed in this newsletter for continuing to give generously to the Friends of Tufts Libraries. As the economy continues to be tight, it is wonderful to know that Friends' gifts added significantly to the library's purchasing power to enrich resources available for our current and future students.

Hats Off to Friends Who Contributed to Level G Construction

Thanks to the responsiveness of the Friends of Tufts Libraries, the renovation of Level G in Tisch Library was planned and completed in record time. Shelving capacity in Tisch Library has now been expanded to support a collection worthy of enhanced graduate programs and research. Donors included JoAnn Giffuni Wellner, A63, Chair of the Friends of Tufts Libraries, who provided the lead gift in honor of her 40th class reunion, the reunion class of 1969, which dedicated their reunion gift to Level G, and many others who answered the call to contribute. Thank you for your support of Tisch Library!

The third annual Maxine Newberg Gordon Book Prize was awarded to Carolyn Abbot (center) by Jo-Ann Michalak, Director of Tisch Library (left) and Christoph Börgers (right), Chair of the Math Department. The new café in Tisch Library's Dranetz Tower, called The Tower, will be open for business by the time you read this. The Undergraduate Experience Task Force recommended a café to "symbolize the library's role as an intellectual center on campus a place where thinking, reading and discussion can take place in a convivial atmosphere ... a fitting place to display faculty books, student art, and other intellectual products of our community." Thanks to the support of President Bacow and Dean Glaser, construction of The Tower was placed on a fast track to be completed in time for fall semester.

The Berger Family Information Technology Transfer Endowment awarded an unprecedented three grants this year. Research Paper Planner will provide web-based dynamic individualized content to assist students in preparing, planning, researching, and writing their research papers. A Digital Repository for Datasets will create a digital library for social science data resources to be used in teaching and research. Education in Motion: A Large Scale Implementation of Video Distribution Technology at Tisch Library will augment the offerings of the Tisch Library by enhancing the quality and expanding the use of streaming video, and establishing a mechanism for the distribution and archiving of the library's video content. More information about the awards can be found at http://www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/Berger/bergerhome.html.

John Holmes' widow, Doris Eyges, read "The Certainty" at the Fourth Annual John Holmes Poetry Walk on April 23, 2004, and then told a story about the poem. It was commissioned by the Steuben Glass Company, which also commissioned a glass piece in a modern style, which was displayed in its showroom on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Photo credit: J. D. In the Electronic Resources Center (ERC), the Richard U. (A62, A91P) and Ellen R. Levine Endowment Fund was used to upgrade the Comweb software, which controls what is displayed on the 15 computers in the room. In addition, a ceiling mounted projector has also been installed. The ERC is very popular with the faculty, who request that librarians teach information literacy skills to many of their undergraduate and graduate courses.

Tisch Library is pleased to announce that in the spring it will be hosting Petticoats and Slide Rules, a traveling exhibit from the archives of the Society of Women Engineers. Sponsored by the Diversity in Science and Engineering Program from Tufts' School of Engineering, Petticoats explores the role of women in engineering by celebrating women's technological achievements, personal experiences and equal rights struggles.

News from Health Sciences Library

Books and bagels in the Health Sciences Library.

In this last year we have been very busy. We completed renovations to the entrance floor of the library, added a café and more leisure seating. All of the chairs in the library were replaced, and the circulation and reference desks were combined into a new Info/Circ Desk. We are happy with the positive response to the renovation by faculty and students. We completed a successful revamping of our website making it much easier to navigate.

The HSL has been funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) to launch the Tufts SPIRAL (Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages) project. SPIRAL is designed to make Asian-language consumer health resources readily available to the Asian-language community in Boston and surrounding areas. This web site will consist of evaluated and annotated links to consumer health-related information sites in Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Vietnamese, Thai, and Khmer languages. Those resources will be promoted through community organizations; including the South Cove Community Health Center, the Sharewood Project Health Clinic (a student run clinic); and community religious associations and community clubs.

Another outstanding accomplishment of the last year has been our cooperative PBL and EBM classes that we have worked on in conjunction with the Medical and Dental School's Curriculum Committees. These classes prepare our students to properly form questions, search the literature effectively, evaluate their search and critically appraise the evidence they find. This skill will greatly enhance their study and will inform their future practice as Doctors.

The next phase of the renovation will expand and improve the Learning Resources Center on the fifth floor to add additional computer and networking access. As one of the few resources used by all of the schools on the Boston campus, the library is proud to be a place where all of the students, faculty and staff will be able to meet, work, study and learn together in a comfortable setting.

News from Ginn Library

The Fletcher School's Edwin Ginn Library has added several databases to its collections during the past several months. These include Janess Information Group (Jane's periodicals and databases, with information on defense, security, weapons, terrorism, intelligence, and public safety); PRS Group Country Data (financial, political and economic risk ratings for 140 countries.); and Foreign Affairs Full Access! (unlimited access to the premier resource for students of international relations and political science-full digital archives of Foreign Affairs back to 1973).

Ken Varnum, IT Manager/Associate Librarian at the Fletcher School. Photo credit: Nieka Apell

Ginn recruited Ken Varnum as Fletcher School IT Manager and Special Projects Librarian in April 2004. Ken has advanced degrees from the University of Michigan in Library and Information Science and in Russian Studies.

Ginn staff will remember the summer of 2004 as "spring training" for the forthcoming major renovations season. The second floor stacks have been turned into offices for Fletcher's Admissions and Registrar's offices; new compact shelving has been installed on the first floor, and the groundwork has been laid for a complete renovation of the library's public and office spaces during the summer of 2005.

The Ginn library website has undergone a complete redesign, making it more consistent with the Fletcher site. The site includes a GinnBlog that alerts readers to electronically available articles relevant to the Fletcher community.

News from Vet Library

(L to r.) Ginger Browne Johnson, Gwen Huneck, Stephen Huneck with "Friendship" print. Photo credit: Melinda Saffer

Splish, splash, your dog needs a bath! Saturday, May 15, was dubbed Grafton Dog Daze. Man's (and woman's!) best friend received the spa treatment, complete with pedicures, to raise funds for the development of a Grafton dog park. Ginger Browne Johnson, V'04, organized the event, which included competitions for best tail wagger, best kisser, and best costume. Held on the grounds surrounding the Webster Veterinary Library, the highlight of the day was the book signing by well-known Vermont artist and author, Stephen Huneck. Mr. Huneck's love of dogs inspires his work, and Sally, his black Labrador retriever, is featured in several of his books for children. Sally's latest adventure is Sally Goes to the Vet. Gwen, Stephen's wife, explained that children often feel anxious when a family pet is injured and must visit the veterinarian. This book is intended to de-mystify the experience, and it does so with colorful and amusing illustrations. At the end of the day, Stephen generously donated a beautiful framed print to the Veterinary Library. Titled "Friendship," this woodcut features 2 yellow labs, a chocolate lab, and a black lab in a rowboat, named "Friendship," being towed ashore by another black lab. It now hangs in the library, on the main level, to be enjoyed by all of the School's future veterinarians.

Upcoming Authors Talks

October 22, 2004 The Highwayman and The Two Swords,
3:30, Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library, Medford

Fantasy author Robert A. Salvatore will introduce the third and final volume of his New York Times best-selling Hunter's Blades trilogy, The Two Swords. In the first book, A Thousand Orcs, the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden was left to fight alone when a ravaging mob of orcs overran the North. In the second book, The Lone Drow, Drizzt has become an orc's worst nightmare-a lone drow with nothing to lose and nowhere to run. In The Two Swords, the battle for the Spine of the World is drawing to a disastrous conclusion, with more than just names on the map at stake. An orc who claims divine right, and wields divine powers, may just succeed in bringing the humans and dwarves to their knees-unless one drow can bring down a thousand orcs with just two swords.

Mr. Salvatore's love affair with fantasy began in college when he was given a copy of The Lord of the Rings. He promptly changed his major from computer science to journalism, receiving degrees in Communications and English from Fitchburgh State College. His first book was published in 1988; he has since written numerous successful Forgotten Realms novels. A Massachusetts native, he is the father of Bryan Salvatore A07.

About the Hunter's Blades trilogy::
"Salvatore's latest series, featuring his most popular character, includes tense battles, vivid landscapes, and memorable characters.

December 1, 2004 An Entrepreneurial University: Tufts, 1976-2002,
3:30, Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library, Medford

The Boston Tufts Alliance is co-sponsoring Sol's talk with the Friends.

Sol Gittleman was Provost of Tufts University from 1981-2002, the longest-serving Provost in the history of American higher education. In An Entrepreneurial University, he leads the reader on an entertaining journey through the sometimes turbulent history of Tufts University since the 1970s, placing Tufts' growth in the context of the ever-evolving world of American higher education. These often tumultuous years were dominated by such challenges as the rise of multiculturalism and affirmative action, financial crises, student activism, and the changing face of American higher education. The book focuses on Tufts University and beyond its campus to American higher education in general.

During his long tenure as Provost, Sol Gittleman taught at Tufts; he continues to do so. Upon stepping down as Provost, he was named Alice and Nathan Gantcher University Professor, a coveted honor at Tufts. He is the author of books on German literature, East European Jewish literature, and the American immigrant experience, and the recipient pf two Fulbright awards, the Harbison Prize of the Danforth Foundation for Outstanding Teaching. and a citation as Professor of the Year from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

About An Entrepreneurial University::
"An Entrepreneurial University is a thoroughly engrossing read that works on many levels, as a rich history of an institution undergoing enormous change, set against the larger background of changes in American higher education; as a story of politics and personalities; and as the story of one unusual and visionary president, Jean Mayer.... This is a direct, candid, personal account. In large measure because of this directness, this book provides an unusual look into academic politics: the rivalries between areas, conflicts between people, and competitions for resources."
-Judith Block McLaughlin, Director, Higher Education Program, Harvard University, Graduate School of Education

The Boston Tufts Alliance is co-sponsoring Sol's talk with the Friends.

A book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore will follow these talks. To order the author's books, call Tufts University Bookstore, General Book Dept., 617-627-2060. Please RSVP by calling 1-800-326-4001. Suggestions for future Authors Talks are welcomed. Come with a Friend or bring a potential Friend. Hope to see you there!
