Friends of Tufts Libraries: 1999 - 2000 Recognition List of Tufts Fund and Capital Donors
A message from the Chair…
Last year the Friends of Tufts Libraries again made significant contributions to Tufts University. In the fall, the Friends hosted a Poetry Walk and panel discussion on the life and work of "Tufts Poet" John Holmes, A29, H62 and launched a website featuring Holmes’ poetry. In the spring, the Friends were joined by the entire Tufts community in celebrating a milestone—the acquisition of Tufts one-millionth volume. Lois Gibbs, the author of Love Canal: the Story Continues…, the featured speaker at the celebration, shared her experiences and insights as a community leader and environmental activist.
The Friends also contributed significantly to the financial well being of Tufts libraries. From July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000 the Friends raised $112,816 to support library acquisitions and operating expenses and $1,177,025 in library construction and book endowments. The names of all (529) members appear within this newsletter and we are so very grateful for such generous support.
This year, the Friends of Tufts Libraries is excited to expand our programming by launching our new "Authors Talk" series in the Tufts libraries. At least one Authors Talk will be held in each of the libraries on the Medford, Boston and Grafton campuses and each program will feature a member of the Tufts faculty, or an alumnus, who is recently published. These talks will be entertaining and educational and provide social opportunities for our spanerse group of Friends to meet while learning. The authors and their talk dates are listed in the Calendar of Friends Events box in this issue—mark your calendars now. And, if the author’s book is in print, the bookstore will co-sponsor a book signing in the library.
Your feedback and input will be important to the series sucess. Please suggest any Tufts authors, who might be interested in participating in the future. We are also expecting to take the Authors Talks "on the road" wherever interested Friends would like to host an event so check the website for further details and let us know if you’d like to be a host.
Thank you for being a Friend. Your continuing participation in the life of Tufts libraries is appreciated greatly by everyone associated with Tufts!

This past spring, an endowed book fund at the Tisch Library gave Barbara Solakian, J60, an ideal way to honor her parents while contributing to her 40th reunion. Solakian established the Nishan and Elizabeth Haroian Memorial Book Fund to support acquisitions at Tisch Library.
"With the creation of the Nishan and Elizabeth Haroian Memorial Book Fund, I have been able to recognize the memory of two very special people and support something that is of great interest to me—Tisch Library at Tufts University," said Solakian.
With rising costs for printed and electronic materials, Tufts’ libraries rely on endowment income to meet the needs of students and faculty. Endowed book funds enable Tufts to purchase materials that otherwise would not be covered by the annual library materials budget.
A gift of $25,000 establishes an endowed book fund and it can be named for an inspanidual or family. An endowed book fund can be a very special vehicle for the perpetual memory of departed loved ones. If desired, an endowed book fund can be used for acquisitions in the particular area of interest to the loved one, and each book is marked with a custom bookplate on the inside cover. Planned gifts and bequest intentions can also be used to establish such funds. For further information on establishing a book fund, please contact Jeff Winey in the Tufts Development Office at (617) 627-5468.
There have been a number of facilities improvements to Tisch Library this summer. 650 lighting fixtures were replaced on Level 1, as was all the public furniture. We also added additional e-mail stations.
In honor of Tufts Libraries’ One Millionth Volumes Tisch Library has installed a permanent exhibit case displaying Lois Gibbs’s Love Canal: The Story Continues… The colorful One Million Volumes banner has been framed to hang over the exhibit case

Music Librarian Michael Rogan currently is working on the new floorplan design for the Library.
An exhibit highlighting The Early Navy Years at Tufts (1941–1945) will be dedicated on October 18, 2000. It will be on display in the Tisch Library, Medford Campus, from October 2 through March 30, 2001. Succeeding exhibits will continue the story of the relationship between Tufts and the Navy.

This fall marks the first time in the history of Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine that all four classes will be based on the Grafton campus. Preparations include the construction of a new teaching laboratory, a fully networked lecture hall, and renovations to the computer laboratory in the Webster Veterinary Medical Library. Thanks to the generous donation from Dean Webster, the computer lab has been expanded to accommodate 40 students. The installation of a LinkNet system has enhanced the use of the lab as a teaching facility by providing the instructor’s station with remote access to the students’ machines. In addition, the lab has new desks, new space for laptop users, and upgraded network performance.
Fairlee Hersey, J35, has made a gift of $100,000 to the School of Veterinary Medicine to create the Fairlee Towsley Hersey Endowed Library Fund for the purchase of books and materials on dogs and wildlife for the school’s Webster Library.
In the Fall of 1999, the Ginn Library began discussing with Oxford University a joint digital library project aimed at improving the world’s access to "gray" literature in the area of humanitarian studies. Working with Oxford’s Refugee Studies Centre and Tufts’ Feinstein International Famine Center, a project is underway with support from funding provided to Oxford. The general intent is to develop a distributed digital library of material on several facets of humanitarian studies with the Ginn library emphasizing material on "humanitarian response." The resulting material would be organized to be available to both academics and field practitioners.
The Ginn Library received a gift of $25,000 from the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, continuing a gift initially made in the previous year. The gift supports the acquisition of ABI Inform, a business and finance data base. It allows all current Tufts faculty, staff and students to search one of the most important data bases of national and international business news.
The Ginn Library is developing new programs in support of the Fletcher School’s new Global Master’s Program (GMAP). This exciting new distance learning program welcomed its first class of 31 students for a two-week residency in August. The members of this class represent some 25 countries and four continents and will be completing most of their class work from their home locations. The Ginn Library has organized remote access to all of the Tufts Libraries’ electronic resources for the students, has provided them with electronic subscriptions to the Economist magazine, has set up a special e-mail account for remote reference service and is organizing a digital delivery system of materials requested by faculty and students.
The Ginn Library, with contributing support from the Tisch Library, has replaced its print collection of 126 Economist Intelligence Unit Country Reports with electronic versions that improve access and eliminate storage and binding costs. The change illustrates some of the challenges facing academic libraries. The change makes it possible for multiple users to gain access to the material simultaneously from any campus computer as well as from remote locations via the Libraries’ proxy servers. The downside for the libraries is that the direct cost is approximately 20% greater than for the print versions. As additional research materials become available in electronic form, this can be expected to be the norm: improved access, reduced storage and handling costs, but increased direct costs. The libraries will face an ongoing challenge to pay for these improved services.
This list recognizes Tufts alumni, parents and friends who so generously made gifts to support Tufts libraries--Tisch, Ginn, Health Sciences and Webster--from July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000.
