The Maxine N Gordon, J70, Book Fund and Prize
News from the Hirsh Health Sciences Library

A message from the Chair
After a most successful first year, the Friends of Tufts Libraries has planned its second series of exciting Authors Talks-all of which have been designated official Tufts University Sesquicentennial events! A. Ross Johnson, F62, will speak on October 18th on International Broadcasting as Public Diplomacy. On November 6th, we will have An Evening of Mysteries with two mystery authors, Katherine Page Hall, an alum, and Michelle Blake, a current English faculty member. On November 27th, Nutrition Professor Miriam Nelson will discuss her new book, Strong Women Eat Well. Esther Wilkins, Tufts Clinical Professor of Dental Periodontology, will speak on February 1 on her book, A Little Book of Dental Hygienists' Rules. On March 6th, Tufts Assistant Archivist Anne Sauer, J91, G98 and will share behind the scenes stories on the photos appearing in Tufts University, published to celebrate Tufts 150th Anniversary. In addition, the Friends are invited to many events sponsored by Tisch Library, which have also been designated official 150th events. See the back page of this issue for dates and details for all of these events. Hope to see you there. Better yet: come with a Friend or bring a potential Friend!
The Friends continued their tradition of contributing significantly to the financial well being of Tufts libraries. From July 1, 2000 to June 30, 2001 the Friends raised $1,413,800 to support library acquisitions, operating expenses, library construction, and book endowments. The names of all 298 members appear within this newsletter and we are so very grateful for such generous support.
Your continued participation in the life of Tufts libraries benefits everyone associated with Tufts! Thank you for being a Friend.

Tisch Library is proud to announce the Maxine Newberg Gordon, J70, Book Fund and Prize has been established in her memory by her family and friends. The purpose of the Book Fund shall be for the Tisch Library to purchase two copies of the same book, one to be awarded to a student who is a mathematics major who has demonstrated a love of reading, literature and poetry, and the other book to be added to the Tisch Library collections and also to make additional purchases for Tisch's collections. The student will be selected by the Mathematics Department and the first award will be made at the March 6, 2002 Authors Talk.
At Tufts, Maxine majored in mathematics, explored and developed intellectual interests for which she maintained a passion throughout her life and also began valued life long friendships. After Tufts, Maxine received a Masters from Northwestern University and became a master teacher of students in math at the Newton and Wayland public schools. A prolific reader, she cherished books and would have wished to establish a library fund to purchase books for students, who, like her, share a passion for mathematics, teaching and literature.

The Ginn Library received a University AUDIT grant to be applied to a collaborative project with several partner institutions including Oxford University's Refugee Studies Centre, the Columbia University Library and the Helsinki Foundation of the Czech Republic. The AUDIT Grant project has included digitizing, cataloging and then searching sample gray literature documents in the area of humanitarian studies. The partnership project, funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, is scheduled to begin this fall and will lead to a distributed digital library aimed at serving the interests of practitioners and academics in the general area of humanitarian assistance.
The Liberty Mutual Group Fund at the Boston Foundation has awarded the Ginn Library and the Fletcher School a grant of $25,000 in support of the Library's Business Reference Center. This grant represents the third of five years support for the library's subscription to ABI/Inform - an important national and international business news database that serves the entire Tufts community.
To support the Fletcher School's Global Masters Program, which graduated its first class of 31 students from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas in July, the Ginn Library sought to provide virtual access to library databases, electronic resources, and reference services, as well as document delivery services when appropriate. During the current year, these services will be formalized and adapted from the library's initial experience.

On May 17, 2001, the Pratt Map Room/GIS Center was named in memory of Theresa Winsor Pratt
who died 10 years ago when she was a senior. Her mother, father, brother and nephew attended the dedication ceremony in Tisch Library.

In order to meet the mounting pressure of collection space within Tisch, the library sought and received help in the form of a $100,000 matching grant from the Seraph Foundation. Through reallocation of resources, the library has added to that gift in order to implement a $250,000 project to install compact shelving on Level G and move targeted segments of the collection into that shelving. This will free up valuable collection space on the main two floors of the library for the collection to continue to grow. The collection has already grown nearly 100,000 volumes since the new library opened in 1996 so it is at shelving capacity. This project will begin and end in the fall of 2001.
Recent aesthetic improvements include: rearrangement of the computer stations in the Levine Electronic Resources Center (ERC) to facilitate instruction, new furniture and equipment in the Pratt Map Room/GIS Center, improved lighting on Level 1 and the Reference Desk, new equipment and furniture in the Microforms area, new photocopiers in the public areas, and improvements to the surrounding landscape. One of these improvements involved the dedication of two benches on the stairway leading to the chapel, dedicated to two recently deceased Tisch staff.

A demonstration and dinner was held April 10, 2001 to make public the Child & Family WebGuide, an online resource for finding research about children and families on the Web. Creation of the WebGuide was funded with a grant from the Berger Family Information Technology Transfer Endowment, which is awarded annually to teams of Tisch librarians working with faculty to create digital library products. Recently the WebGuide was featured in the Browser column of the Technology section in the New York Times and it has received further development funding from the William T. Grant Foundation.

In February 2001, the Health Sciences Database (HSDB) received national recognition as CIO Magazine's Enterprise Value Award. According to the CIO award "The 2001 Enterprise Value Awards winners-Tufts University, Office Depot and Harrah's Entertainment-conceived a vision of the future and pursued it." The HSDB, which was developed by the Health Sciences Library staff, is the digital curriculum management system which delivers course materials for the Schools of Medicine, Dental, Veterinary, Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and several others.
HSL welcomes a new Information Services Department Head, Kate Kelly, from Treadwell Library in Massachusetts General Hospital.
MD Consult has arrived at the HSL! MD Consult is an online resource designed to quickly answer clinical questions and keep up with the latest in medicine. It provides access to more that 35 primary medical textbooks, over 45 clinical journals, hundreds of clinical practice guidelines, drug information, searchable databases and CME modules. Friends can access MD Consult by coming to the HSL Library for onsite access since our license limits remote access to current faculty, staff and students.
Other HSL news can be read in HSLinks, available online at www.library.tufts.edu/hsl/hsl_guide.html
