Joann Wellner, J63, Chair Friends of Tufts Libraries

A message from the Chair…

I am delighted to tell you about the many Friends events planned for 2003–2004. The Friends will present three Authors Talks: Professor Virginia Drachman, AP05, author of Enterprising Women; Professor Jay Cantor, author of Great Neck; and Gregory Maguire, G90, author of Mirror Mirror, who also has a play, Wicked, opening on Broadway this fall. And in response to Friends' suggestions, a special Friends workshop on "Uncovering the Hidden Web," with helpful pointers on how to find travel, health, financial and genealogical information on the web, will precede the November 4th Authors Talk. (See the Calendar of Friends Events in this issue for these events and others.)

The greatest excitement for me has been establishing my challenge gift to raise half the funding necessary to complete improvements to Level G of the library, which includes compact shelving and user seating. I chose this gift because students and faculty had identified making Level G publicly accessible a high priority. I am so pleased to report that because of Friends support, the construction is proceeding with a target completion date of January 2004. (See the box below for more information on the Level G construction project.)

Last year, the Friends contributed significantly to enhancing the collections and services of Tufts libraries. From July 1, 2002, to June 30, 2003, the Friends raised over $1,363,700 in cash and new commitments to support acquisitions, operating expenses, library construction, and book endowments. The names of 276 Friends appear within this newsletter, and I thank all of you for continuing to be a generous Friend to Tufts libraries. Library donations, especially during these tight economic times, are used directly for improvements to the collections and services to benefit current and future students. The entire Tufts Community is so very grateful for such generous support.

Friends Match Donor Funds to Support Tisch Library's Level G Construction

Tisch Library is pleased to announce that construction has begun for the renovation of Level G. New carpeting, overhead lighting, compact shelving, and user seating will allow for public access. Currently, older scholarly journals are stored in this area and staff must retrieve all requested items. When Level G renovations are complete this winter, shelving capacity of Tisch Library will be expanded to one million volumes to support enhanced graduate programs and research. The Tisch Library staff has developed detailed plans for the area, including the collection move.

JoAnn Giffuni Wellner, A63, Chair of the Friends of Tufts Libraries, has provided the lead gift in honor of her 40th class reunion. She is challenging fellow alums and Friends to match her gift in order to complete Level G.

If you would like to make a gift directed to this project, please contact Allison Davies at 617-627-3014 or allison.davies@tufts.edu. Thank you in advance for your support

News from Health Sciences Library

The Health Sciences Library is very excited to have begun the first phase of a two phase renovation project. This summer and fall we are rebuilding the entrance floor of the library to enhance the library and make it much more pleasant and welcoming. We are moving the current journals to this floor, adding a small coffee shop, and adding a lot of comfortable seating. The Circulation and Reference desks are being moved to a single location to make it easier for our students to know where to go. When complete, this phase of the renovations will provide more natural light in the seating areas and will include upgraded light fixtures for the library. These improvements will make the library a place that people will want to come to when studying alone or with friends.

The second phase of the renovation will expand and improve the Learning Resources Center on the fifth floor to add additional computer and networking access. As one of the few resources used by all of the schools on the Boston campus, the library is proud to be a place where all of the students, faculty and staff will be able to meet, work, study and learn together in a comfortable setting.

Tisch V-12/NROTC Exhibit Endowment Created and Volunteers Solicited

Tufts alumni from the V-12/NROTC program continue to be generous library supporters. Their Executive Board has decided to use the remainder of funds raised for the V-12 exhibits to create an exhibit endowment for Tisch Library. The endowment will be used to hire an exhibit designer to work with future reunion classes to create two new exhibits a year featuring memorabilia from Digital Collections and Archives. The goal is to select and mount exhibits with alumni themes, including Navy recognition when appropriate. Local area alumni in reunion classes ending in 9 or 4 who are interested in working with other alumni and an exhibit designer to create two exhibits during their reunion year should contact Tom Williams at 617-627-3279 as soon as possible.

Upcoming Authors Talks

October 24, 2003
Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business,

3:30-4:45 pm, Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library, Medford

Meet Katharine Goddard, owner of a print shop and publisher of the first signed copy of the Declaration of Independence; Madam C. J. Walker, whose hair care products brought her from her slave parents' dilapidated cabin to her own Hudson River estate; and Hazel Bishop, whose "kissable" lipstick left an indelible mark on the cosmetics industry…. These are just three of the diverse women whose lives unfold in this engaging history of women entrepreneurs in America from the colonial era to the end of the twentieth century. This fascinating book, by Tufts Arthur Jr. and Lenore Stern Professor of American History Virginia G. Drachman, is the companion publication to the national traveling exhibition she spearheaded, which opened in 2002 at the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington and is now touring the country.

A book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore will follow the talk. To order the author's books, call Tufts University Bookstore, General Book Dept., 617’627’2060. A reception will be held following the Authors Talk. Please RSVP by calling 1’800’326’4001. Suggestions for future Authors Talks are welcomed. Come with a Friend or bring a potential Friend. Hope to see you there!

About Enterprising Women:
"What might have turned out to be a rather commercial tome… has become a reference work to consult on the topic of women in business… There's Lydia Pinkham, inventor of tonics and other health products, claiming, 'A woman best understands a woman's ills.' And who could forget Katharine Graham's words when she decided to publish the Pentagon Papers: 'Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead. Let's go.' Inspiring and long overdue."
-Barbara Jacobs, Booklist

November 4, 2003
Great Neck,

3:30-4:45 p.m., Austin Conference Room Tisch Library, Medford

The much-praised author of Krazy Kat and The Death of Che Guevara, Tufts English Professor Jay Cantor will read from his latest novel, Great Neck, the tumultuous story of a group of friends growing up idealistic, radical, and romantic in the sixties and seventies. We enter their lives in 1960 as a sixth’grade class of Great Neck kids-most of them Jewish’learns for the first time, in horrifying detail, about the Holocaust, with its moral imperative to "make justice" in the world. When the older brother of one of the students is murdered in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, they think they have found their mission, and when they receive letters from him seemingly written after his death, a heady mystical dimension is added that impels them into the civil rights and peace movements, joining their lives to a multitude of others… Great Neck is the compelling portrait of complex, appealing young men and women shaping and being shaped by the momentous events of their time.

"Great Neck has a Trollopian range-heartbreak to hilarity. And the style is richly allusive and splendidly sardonic ... reading this novel is trippy and exhilarating, like defusing a bomb while skateboarding. It's real American literature as the likes of Melville understood it."
-Diane Roberts, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

"A truly landmark book....chock full of valuable lessons that will help every pet and pet parent."
-Mart Becker, DVM, Good Morning, Veterinarian (TV show)

A book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore will follow these talks. To order the author's books, call Tufts University Bookstore, General Book Dept., 617-627-2060.
