This has been an extraordinary year at the Tufts Libraries. We are about to add the millionth volume to the Tufts libraries' collections, and funding opportunities have been identified at each of the libraries to update and renovate space, add books and periodicals, and better serve our students. |
| We could not have done this without the help of the Friends of Tufts Libraries. Collectively, they sent nearly $150,000 in support of library projects at Tufts this past year. Another handful have included the libraries in their will or as part of an estate plan. We are so grateful for this support and for the changes it will bring. The fall reception for the Friends of Tufts Libraries will be held at the Tisch Library on Friday, September 17, 1999 featuring a panel discussion of the works of Tufts English Professor, John Holmes, A29, H62. Holmes, who published six volumes of verse, left 1,000 poems for the archives at Tufts. "The Poet's Work" is a new web site entirely devoted to Holmes's life and writings made possible by a generous gift from Winslow H. Duke, A53. English Professor Debra Digges will lead the panel. Other planned events to put on your calendar --

John Holmes Collection... John Holmes (1904-1962) was more than just a poet and professor of English at Tufts for nearly thirty years. Holmes was Tufts Poet, known for his commitment not only to the craft of poetry, but also to teaching that craft to the many students in his classes. He published six volumes of verse during his lifetime and his poems appeared in countless journals, magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. |

Upon his death Holmes left his papers, including manuscripts of nearly one thousand poems, to Tufts University. Generous support provided by Winslow H. Duke, A53 has enabled the University Archives to devote the time and effort necessary to make this rich collection available to researchers. The cornerstone of the project is The Poet' s Work, a web site devoted to Holmes' s life and writings. Drawing on the themes of Holmes' s 1939 book of the same title, The Poet's Work provides a space for the study of Holmes's poetry as well as the craft of writing which Holmes strove to teach his students. On September 17, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. the University Archives will celebrate completion of work on the John Holmes collection with a panel discussion of Holmes' s life and work followed by a poetry walk around the campus in which poems will be read at landmarks associated with Holmes. | On the Hill... Renowned author and journalist David Halberstam gave the address to the Class of 1999 at Tufts' 143rd Commencement on May 23rd. He began by telling about his father, who graduated from Tufts in 1925. Halberstam advised the graduates that as they pursue their right to happiness, they should try to hold an inner sense of contentment and personal validity. There were 1123 graduates from Arts and Sciences, 184 from Engineering, 163 from the Medical School, 141 from the Dental School, 190 from the Fletcher School, 50 from the School of Nutrition and 76 from the Veterinary School. Applications for undergraduate admission to Tufts rose to record numbers this year, with over 13,400 applications received. This broke last year' s total by over 1100. Since 1993, Tufts Undergraduate Admissions has seen a 77% increase in applications. The Student Services Center, slated to open in January 2000, will sit atop a new parking garage on Boston Avenue. Students will have easy access to the Center from a bridge that will extend from the academic quad. Class deans, the Dean of Students, Career Planning, Registration, and Financial Aid, and the Bursar' s Office will all be housed in the new Center. Tufts University received the prestigious Henry R. Luce Professorship Award, one of only two awarded each year. The Luce professor will hold joint appointments in Biology and the School of Nutrition. In addition to undergraduate instruction, the professor will conduct research with the Famine Center. The Luce program was established in 1968 to further academic experimentation and creativity. The Beelzebubs, the Tufts a cappella singing group was spotted by a national production company during their performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. As a result, the 'Bubs were invited to sing during the pregame festivities for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game July 13 at Fenway Park. |

Library News... The Tufts Libraries have formed partnerships with the Boston Library Consortium and other library consortia, which has aided in controlling the costs of electronic resources such as Lexis-Nexis, the Web of Science, and the Encyclopedia britannica Online. The Tufts Libraries have joined the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), an organization that sets out "to create a more competitive marketplace for research information by providing opportunities for new publishing ventures." In partnership with scholarly societies, SPARC is helping to create alternatives to high-price journals. The Ginn Library has received a gift from Richard D. Hill, H86 and his wife, Polly B. Hill to create the Richard D. and Polly B. Hill International Business Reference Center. Part of the gift will be directed immediately for the purchase of computers and |

| electronic reference materials, and the remainder of the gift has been put into a gift annuity that will eventually come to the Fletcher School as an endowed book fund. Hill said, "We made this recent gift because of the increasing interest among Fletcher students in the business education side of the school...I'm hopeful that this addition to the library will give students the resources they need to help their careers." Planning has begun for a new music building on the Medford Campus which will bring together the music library, music classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and the Music Department Offices. The modern and sophisticated facility will also include a recital hall. Michael Rogan, the new Music Librarian, has been meeting with Music Department faculty, liaisons from the Tufts Construction Office, as well as two architecture firms to work on the design of the new building. The plans presently call for the Music Library to double its space in the new building. The Health Sciences Library acquired several Ejournals this past spring, including Biological Chemistry, Chemical Senses, Genes & Development, and the Quarterly Journal of Medicine. All Ejournals can be found on their alphabetical listings of ejournals and books at http://www.library.tufts.edu/hsl/ejalpha.HTML The Tisch Library has acquired several new social science databases. Among these are Ethnic NewsWatch, GenderWatch, Columbia International Affairs Online, and Statistical Universe. In addition to other online databases, these are available from the Research Tools link on the Tisch Library Homepage at http://www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/tisch.HTML The Tisch Library celebrated National Library Week from April 11-17, 1999. As part of the celebration, The American Library Association and the Library of Congress jointly sponsored a photography contest. The Tisch Library featured an exhibit comprised of photographs that were submitted to the local contest. The winning photo was submitted to the national contest. The Webster Veterinary Medical Library redesigned its web site this summer to better showcase the wide array of services and electronic resources available. Of special note is the addition of the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau database to the library network, the premier index for veterinary and animal science. |
