A message from the Chair…

In this issue, we highlight those Tufts alumni, parents and friends who have established endowed book funds at the University libraries. We do this to say a special "thanks," and also to encourage others to consider establishing their own endowed book funds.

Last year, income from these endowments reached over $325,000. More than 6,000 items were purchased as the result of this extraordinary philanthropy!!

If you are interested, a five year pledge of $5,000 per year, a mention in an estate plan, or $25,000 outright makes it happen. What lovelier way to create a permanent tribute to a loved one, to honor your family, and to underscore your faith in the importance of libraries at Tufts?

Spotlight: Library Endowments at Tufts

Have you ever opened the inside cover of a library book to be greeted by a bookplate with a name printed on it? At Tufts, this is becoming a commonplace occurrence. Each year, the budget of the university supports most operating needs of Tufts' four libraries. Endowed funds dedicated solely to enhance Tufts' libraries, however, also provide critical resources.

Established by the generous philanthropy of Tufts alumni, parents and friends, library endowments make it possible for Tufts to purchase materials beyond the scope of each library's annual budget. Most endowments are used to acquire printed or electronic materials but in recent years, several endowments have been established specifically to help a library take full advantage of information technology.

At Tufts, the minimum amount to establish an endowment is $25,000 although many named library endowments well exceed this sum. Endowments can be created immediately with a gift of cash or stock or through a planned gift or bequest intention. Donors can designate their gifts to support a specific priority such as technology or library internships while endowed book funds can be directed to support any subject area. Funds can be named for the donor or loved one, and over the years, additional gifts can be given to enhance the fund.

Each library director would be delighted to discuss the establishment of an endowment to support any one of Tufts' libraries. Endowments are an excellent way to have your contribution benefit students and faculty teaching and research for many years to come. Top of page
