Linking to Library Resources in Blackboard
For assistance creating links to library resources, contact:
Linking to Full-text Articles
1. Find out if your article is available online in full-text format.
Search for the name of the journal in the Electronic Journals list . In some cases you will be taken to a homepage for your journal where you can browse individual issues and locate the article you need. Other times you will be taken to a page where you can search for your article. Most databases allow you to search for a specific article within a journal on their advanced search page.
2. Use our step-by-step directions on the Linking to Articles page to create a persistent URL, which is required for ongoing viewing of articles. Or use our Article Linking in Blackboard guide for general directions on how to create a stable URL, which is required for the ongoing viewing of articles.
Tip: Not all of the full-text databases allow you to link directly to articles. If your database isn't listed on the Linking to Articles page, you can still link from your Blackboard class site to the search page of the database or journal with instructions for your students on how to search for articles. See below for instructions.
Linking to Databases and Electronic Journals
Provide a link directly to a database or electronic journal so your students will be able to:
- Search for the full text of an article you would like them to read. Give the students the article citation and have them search the database on their own. This is an option for those databases that do not allow direct linking.
- Use the library resource you recommend to find articles for an assignment.
To link to a specific library database
- Go to the Databases & Articles page and look up the database by name.
- Click on the database link to take you to the page titled Proxy Services for Off Campus Access to This Resource.
- Copy and paste the url for this page from the address bar in your browser. This link will work on or off campus. For example the link to Expanded Academic will look like this:
http://www.library.tufts.edu/ezproxy/ezproxy.asp?LOCATION=INFOExAcAS
To link to an electronic journal
- Go to the Library Catalog and do a journal title search.
- Click on the link in the Electronic Access box provided on the catalog record for this journal title. This will take you to the page titled Proxy Services for Off Campus Access to This Resource.
- Copy and paste the url for this page from the address bar in your browser. This link will work on or off campus. For example the link to the journal Lion and the Unicorn will look like this:
http://www.library.tufts.edu/ezproxy/ezproxy.asp?LOCATION=MuseLionUnic
Linking to Electronic Books
To link to an electronic book to which the library subscribes
- Go to the Library Catalog and do a title search.
- Click on the link in the Electronic Access box provided on the catalog record for this electronic book title. This will take you to the page titled Proxy Services for Off Campus Access to This Resource.
- Copy and paste the url for this page from the address bar in your browser. This link will work on or off campus. For example the link to the electronic book, Salem possessed, will look like this:
http://www.library.tufts.edu/ezproxy/ezproxy.asp?LOCATION=ACLS063
To link to an electronic book from Google Books
- Go to the "Advanced Search" page and search by title, author or ISBN. After clicking "Google Search," you'll be taken to a results page.
- Click on the "About this Book" link located under the Summary section on the right hand menu.
- Now copy and paste the URL from your browser. For others ways to link to Google Books go to the Google Book Search Help Center.
Adding Additional Library Resources to Your Blackboard course
- Contact the reference and instruction librarian for your department , who will be able to suggest resources appropriate to the subject of your course and the research needs of your students.
- If you bring your class to the library for an instruction session, a librarian will often create a handout for your class that could be posted to your Blackboard site.
- Provide contact information for the subject librarian on your course site, so students can contact this librarian directly for help with research questions.
- Librarians are happy to consult with you to create customized materials to assist your students with their research.
