The Tisch Library Instruction Program is instrumental in helping the Tufts community become highly proficient researchers by using the library’s collections and services. We are committed to providing a life-long learning opportunity for students in order to allow them to become self directed and self sufficient.
We accomplish our goals through the following activities:
We integrate the university’s emphasis on learning in its vision statement in everything we do. "Learning: Knowledge is important but alone is not enough. Learning must be lifelong. We will teach our students how to obtain, evaluate, and use information. We will prepare them to use historical perspective and to be receptive to new ideas. Our students will be sensitive to ethical issues and able to confront them."
Information literacy enhances the pursuit of knowledge by preparing students to think critically and use information for their academic, professional and personal lives. We embrace the Association of College and Research Library’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (PDF) and that document’s definition of information literacy as "…a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."
An English 2 student commented, “I thought this was an incredibly helpful session. I had a general understanding on how to use our library resources but I did not realize that there were plenty of sites out there that are made specifically for our topic. I wish I had known about these resources sooner. It would have made research much easier for me my freshman year."
An art history instructor said, “This was a wonderful workshop. You have taken the research tutorial to a new level, and I am so excited to see how the students will integrate your demonstrations. Thank you!”
A graduate student told us, “I learned a lot about looking for journals online. Most importantly I learned how to find out if a journal is online and how then to search through it. I can't even begin to tell you how helpful this will be.”
Professor Mary Jane Shultz, Chemistry Department chair wrote, “Thanks for your help last semester. The references from my class on their projects were greatly improved and all I changed was having you present to the class.”
