Summer and Fall Semesters, 2001

Tufts Poets Exhibit (January 10, 2002)

Beginning on January 11, 2002, the Tisch Library will present an exhibit on selected Tufts poets who were affiliated with the university prior to 1980. The exhibit focuses on two alumni and two professors who were active in the twentieth century and received national recognition for their poetry.
The poets range from the lesser-known to the internationally acclaimed. They include Jeremy Ingalls (J1932), John Ciardi (A1938), Joseph Charles Kennedy (Tufts Faculty 1963-79), and Denise Levertov (Tufts Faculty 1973-79). Amongst them, these poets garnered such prestigious prizes as the Shelley Memorial Award, the Avery Hopwood Prize, the Prix de Rome, the Academy of American Poets Lamont Award, and the Bess Hokin Prize. The exhibit features biographical data, information on their life at Tufts University, and a selection of their works. The exhibit runs until early March and is part of Tufts 150th anniversary celebration.

Renaissance Online (December 13, 2001)

ITER

ITER is an index of interdisciplinary journal literature on the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700). It includes citations for articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, abstracts, and discographies.

Nobel Laureates on Libraries (December 13, 2001)

Libraries and education are top concerns of Nobel laureates surveyed about their beliefs on the future role of the internet. In the survey of 71 laureates, 93 percent said the internet will provide greater access to libraries and information worldwide; 92 percent said inadequate educational opportunities and illiteracy are major problems facing mankind; 87 percent believe the internet will have a positive effect on improving education; and 74 percent believe the internet will give students greater learning opportunities through virtual classrooms by year 2020. "The results ... are particularly interesting because most of the laureates surveyed did not grow up using computers or the internet," said Mary McIntosh, vice president of Princeton Survey Research Associates, which conducted the study for Cisco Systems Inc.

Late Night Study, 6 a.m., 12/9-12/19 (December 6, 2001)

Effective Sunday, December 9th, Late Night Study is extended until 6:00 a.m., Sunday through Thursday in Tisch Library's Reading Room during reading and exam period, December 9th through December 19th.

GIS Poster Exhibit (December 6, 2001)

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Exhibit in Tisch lobby features maps ranging from Siting a Windfarm to Recording Blood Lead Levels in Children. These posters show the range of possibilities for utilizing the equipment available here on campus in the GIS Lab, located on the main level of the Tisch Library. Available to all Tufts students, faculty, and staff, this state-of-the-art laboratory allows users to explore and develop a broad range of research topics, providing high quality graphic supplementation to support theses and independent research projects.
Last year's poster winners are among the items displayed. Start those creative juices flowing and watch for the GIS Poster Contest announcement this Spring!

Authors Talk Nov. 27th (November 15, 2001)

An Authors Talk, sponsored by the Tisch and Health Services libraries, will be held November 27, 3:00-4:00 pm in Goddard Chapel on the Medford campus. Miriam Nelson, Tufts professor and author of Strong Women Eat Well, will be the featured speaker. Book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore follows the talk. Exhibits of Nelson’s books are in Tisch Library lobby until January 10, 2002 and in Health Sciences Library on the Boston campus during the month of November.

Sept. 11th and Beyond (November 15, 2001)

The Institute for Global Leadership, the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Tisch Library present an exhibit comprising a collection of readings and resources to help students and the Tufts community to gain a better understanding of the terrorist attacks of September 11th and the ensuing events and consequences, as well as to put these events in a larger context. The topics included are: Terrorism, Islam, Religion and Violence, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, US Foreign Policy in South Asia, US Foreign Policy in the Middle East, Foreign Military Intervention, Post-Soviet States, Israel/Palestine, and Civil Liberties in the US. Tufts faculty who specialize in these topics, in collaboration with Tisch librarians, made recommendations of quality readings and resources for this exhibit.

Children's Book Week (November 8, 2001)

Lawrence Bacow, President of Tufts University, is scheduled to read some of his favorite children's literature to a group of young children from local schools on Tuesday, November 13th, in the Tisch Library. This year's theme, "Get Carried Away…READ!," highlights the importance of reading in the development of young minds. This is the sixth year that Tisch Library has joined in the celebration.
In addition to President Bacow's readings, there will be a display of children's books and artwork from November 12-16 in the Tisch Library.

Wireless Pilot (November 8, 2001)

How can you walk around the library with your laptop computer and be connected to the internet but have no wires or cables? You can become part of the Wireless Networking pilot project Tisch Library will be conducting in cooperation with TCCS.
Starting Tuesday, November 13, 2001, interested Tufts Faculty, Staff and Students can pick up an application at the Tisch Library reference desk and bring it along with their laptop computer to the Telecom Office in Ballou Hall M-F 9am-5pm. There, a one-time installation and testing of necessary software and drivers will be performed. After that, participants will be able to checkout wireless networking cards for use in their laptops whenever they are in the library.

150 Years of AS&E Libs (November 8, 2001)

This academic year, the Tisch Library 150th Committee is presenting exhibits in the Tisch lobby highlighting the role of the Arts, Sciences, and Engineering libraries throughout the history of Tufts University. This is part of Tisch Library's contribution to the celebration of the University's 150th anniversary. The current exhibit focuses on the architects and architecture of the various buildings in which the AS&E libraries have been housed over the years. The exhibit will be on display through the first week of January, 2002.

Mystery Authors - November 6, 2001 (October 31, 2001)

An Evening of Mysteries Authors Talk will be held November 6, 6:30-7:30 pm in Braker 001. Two Tufts authors will speak: Michelle Blake, English faculty member and author of Earth Has No Sorrow, the second title in her Lily Connor series, and Katherine Hall Page, who graduated from Tufts Graduate School in 1974 and wrote Body in the Moonlight, which is the 11th title in her Faith Fairchild series. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Tufts Libraries and has been designated an official Tufts 150th Anniversary Event. Book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore follows talk. Exhibits on the two authors are in Tisch Library lobby until November 11, 2001.

Late Night Study 3 AM (October 18, 2001)

Effective October 21, 2001, Late Night Study is extended until 3 AM, Sunday through Thursday in Tisch Library's Reading Room. During Thanksgiving recess November 21-22, there will be NO Late Night Study.

Polling the Nations is a comprehensive collection of public opinion material from the United States and abroad. It contains the full text of some 400,000 questions and responses on 4,500 topics.

Understanding September 11th (October 1, 2001)

The American Association of University Presses (AAUP) along with libraries are making tremendous efforts to provide a range of options for people trying to come to terms with the tragic events of September 11, 2001. AAUP has created a link for books on "understanding the events of September 11, 2001" at its website, AAUP Executive Director Peter Givler says the resources listed on the site have continued to surge, offering a diverse range of works from America's most influential and knowledgeable sources. "Books for understanding is now up to 264 titles from 35 presses," notes Givler, with a backlog of titles to be posted in the coming days. "When we clear out the current backlog, we'll have 333 titles up from 45 presses." With titles ranging over subjects from the World Trade Center to terrorism to Islam, the list is an extraordinary resource for academic libraries and can be accessed here.

Encyclopedia of Life Sciences is a dynamic reference work integrating current theory and practice of all basic and applied aspects of the life sciences, with an emphasis on cell and molecular biology.

Banned Books Week Display (September 20, 2001)

"Banned Books Week" exhibit is on display in the Tisch Library from September 20 through September 28. This event is sponsored by the American Library Association, among other organizations. Banned Books Week is "intended as a reminder not to take one of our most important freedoms for granted -- the freedom to read and explore many points of view." (ALA "Banned Books Week" site)
Again this year, the Tisch Library joins in celebrating this freedom with a BBW exhibit. The exhibit identifies media censored throughout the world and historically, and includes news articles, films, and books of many natures.

Student lockers are assigned on a semester basis--first come, first served--with preference given to Arts, Sciences & Engineering and Nutrition School students. A copy of the policy and application are available at Administrative Services, Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. All lockers are located on Level 1 near the public telephones.

In response to student requests, Tisch Library has changed its academic semester library hours for Saturday and Sunday. Tisch Library is now open 10AM - 9PM on Saturday and 10AM - Midnight on Sunday.

Tisch Library Tours (August 23, 2001)

Twenty minute tours of the Tisch Library for any member of the Tufts community will take place from August 28 through September 7, with the exception of Labor Day. The tours begin at noon in the lobby and last approximately 20 minutes. Bring your friends and colleagues! Take a tour; get a fabulous Tisch Library mug.
