Logging in

If the Bloomberg terminal has been logged off, log on as:
username: bloomberg
password: bloomberg
domain: MUGARCOMPLAB

The Bloomberg service should start automatically.

Log in to the Bloomberg service as ginn; password: fletcher.

Keyboard Principles

The CONN/DFLT key takes you back to the log-in.

The CANCEL key cancels all the choices made up to that point EXCEPT the Market Sector you have chosen.

The MENU key takes you BACK one step.

The GO key is equivalent to Enter.

Yellow keys search a particular Market Sector, such as Equities, Currencies, Commodities, Governments, Money Markets, etc. They MUST be followed by the GO key.

If you can't find what you're looking for, type in a keyword or two and hit HELP. For instance, “forward rate” HELP.

To print data, hit the PRINT key. This prints one screen at a time. In news stories, use the Options drop down menu to print the whole story.

Printing/Excel

Academic subscriptions do not allow downloading of data – you must copy and paste into Excel:

  • Open Excel from the Start menu; minimize
  • Find the data you want in Bloomberg
  • Use the left mouse button to outline the data, one column at a time
  • Maximize the Excel spreadsheet
  • Put the cursor where you want to paste the column of data
  • Click Ctrl + V to paste the data
  • Repeat for each column of data

Find Information on a Company and its Stock

If you know the ticker symbol, type the ticker, hit the yellow EQUITY key, and then GO.

If you don’t know the ticker, type the name of the company and hit HELP.
Click on Companies, then on the specific one you want.
If you want information about the stock, click on Equities.
OR use the ticker lookup function— EQUITY key, type TK, hit GO, then choose the company you want from those listed.

When you type the ticker, EQUITY, GO, your menu of options will include company description, historical prices, relative performance (comparing it to others in the industry and to industry averages), news, fundamentals and earnings analysis (this includes balance sheets, income statements and P/E ratios). Choose the one you want by entering the line number or by clicking with the mouse.

OR, Once you are within a company menu:

For current news about the company – type CN hit GO
For financial analysis type FA hit GO
For analysts recommendations, type ANR and hit GO
In many cases you can choose whether to receive your data by table or graph. If you are looking at a graph, you can retrieve the data points by hitting the green PAGE FWD key.

To get news on a company or subject:

Type N; hit GO. This gives you the main news menu from which to make choices.

If you want historical news on a company or subject, choose TNI.
Fill in the time period, subject and/or company in the amber fields, then hit GO.

Once you are within the menu for a particular company, type CN and GO for current news.

To find Industry Analysis:

Type IBQ and hit GO.

To find information on currencies:

Click the yellow CRNCY key, then hit GO.
Choose Current markets and monitors, then World currency rates.
Note that you can change the base currency to receive your data.
You can also click on Forward Rates or Cross rates to get comparison tables of Key rates.


Tips:

Remember that MENU functions as the Back key

Any data in an AMBER field may be changed. This is how you choose date ranges or a particular currency in which to receive your data.

Once you know the code for the function you want to use, you can use that as a shortcut. For instance, if you know that WEI is the code for the World Equity Indices, type WEI and hit GO to go there directly.
