Objectives

Students in this rotation will be able to

  • write a concise clinical scenario
  • research the etiology, epidemiology and management of a medical condition
  • navigate electronic textbooks by using search and browse features
  • identify pertinent genetic information on the condition in the OMIM database
  • locate evidence-based articles in Ovid Medline
  • cite their sources in a consistent, complete manner 
  • summarize the evidence as it applies to their question
  • state the implications for clinical practice

Assignment

Librarians will demonstrate search techniques and assist students with their research during class.

Students will

  • download from TUSK the submission form
  • select a medical condition from a case they have encountered in clinic
  • provide a clinical scenario for the case
  • perform background research on the condition
  • provide a complete citation for each of the questions
    • cite only resources licensed by Tufts for questions 1- 6 (question 2 may cite the OMIM government web site)
    • cite a government website for question 7
    • cut/paste a relevant section for each question
    • spell out all abbreviations
    • cite a particular textbook no more than twice
    • avoid repetition and extensive quotes
  • formulate a question about a therapeutic option for the patient (fill in the blanks)
  • search Ovid Medline & apply to the condition set these EBM limits until a relevant article is found
    • EBM reviews
    • publication types: meta-analysis & RCT
    • MeSH study types: cohort studies & Case-Control Studies
    • review articles
  • cut/paste from Medline the selected citation
  • identify its study type & summarize the evidence
  • state its implications for the patient
  • email their research as an attachment to their assigned librarian by the due date.

Grading

The assignment will account for ten percent of the course grade. Librarians will give five points for the background research and citation to the best evidence. Dr. Elmarsafawy will give five points for the clinical scenario, overall relevance of the research, EBM question, summary of the evidence, and implications for practice. Two points will be deducted for late submissions.

Citation Formats

Complete citations may be in any established bibliographic style or modeled on our Sample Assignment.

  • Citations to articles may be pasted from MEDLINE directly. Journals must be available at Tufts.
  • Book sections should include the chapter title and author(s), work title, publisher, date, inclusive pages, and call number or, for an online version, the provider.
  • Webpages must include the sponsoring agency; title of the page and relevant section; URL; and date accessed.
