Admission
The Tufts University Hirsh Health Sciences Library is open
to the faculty, staff and students of:
- Tufts University
- Tufts Medical Center Hospital
- Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging
- Tufts-associated teaching sites
- Boston Library Consortium
For admission and/or borrowing privileges at the HHSL, a
valid HHSL card is required. Non-affiliated users may inquire
at the InfoCirc Desk about the HHSL
Associates Program, which is offered to individuals, non-profit
organizations, and for-profit corporations at various fees.
The Hirsh Health Sciences Library is not open to the public.

Loan Periods
Books (from the general collection):
- Circulate for 4weeks
- Can be renewed twice for 4weeks each if no requests or
recalls have been received
- Books that are requested must be returned by the date
due; if recalled, they must be returned within 2 days
Books (from the leisure reading collection)
- Circulate for 4 weeks
- Can be renewed twice for 2 weeks each if no requests or
recalls have been received
- Books that are requested must be returned by the date
due; recalls are allowed only for class reserve, if recalled
they must be returned within 2 days
Reserve books:
- A blue library use only sticker indicates the book can
only be used in the library
- A purple overnight sticker indicates the book can be
taken out for overnight use after 4:00PM weekdays or after
4:00PM on Fridays for weekend use.
- Reserve books are due by 9:00AM the following day or on
Monday following a weekend.
- A valid Tufts/Tufts Medical Center library card is required and
only one reserve book per person can be checked out per
night
InfoCirc desk books:
- InfoCirc desk books circulate for 3 hours
- The borrower's Tufts/Tufts Medical Center ID is held while the book
is in use
- InfoCirc desk books do not circulate outside the library
Slides, videotapes and models from the Library Systems
Office desk:
- Can be used in the library for 2 hours
- Non-reserve items circulate for one week
Special collection materials:
- Are to be used only in the library
Library
Services for Clinical Faculty and Academic Appointees
All current TUSM clinical faculty and academic appointees have
full library privileges as described below:
- Borrowing privileges at all Tufts libraries according
to their circulation policies. Registration
is required for borrowing privileges.
- Reference services: by phone 617.636.6705, email at hhsl@tufts.edu
and in person at the HHSL InfoCirc Desk
- Access to print and electronic collections including off-site
access to electronic resources.
You can access these resources from the library homepage
at http://www.library.tufts.edu/hhsl.
When the system prompts you for your Tufts ID, enter either
your Tufts Employee number or your Tufts ID number without
the dashes and you will have access.
- Classes offered at the Learning Resource Center (LRC):
hands on instruction in the use of electronic resources
and supported software.
- Document
Delivery Services: fee-based.
- Reserve
a Room: Clinical faculty can reserve seminar rooms and
computer labs for classes.
- Borrowing privileges at 19 member libraries of the Boston
Library Consortium: Please inquire at InfoCirc Desk
for a Boston Library Consortium (BLC) card for borrowing
at member institutions.
- Virtual
Catalog of the Boston Library Consortium and Metro Boston
Library Network: order books for free from many Massachusetts
academic libraries, for pickup at the Health Sciences Library.
