textbooks and reference works available in the library
and on the Web.
- Students participate in a treasure hunt for specific
types of information.
Second
Semester
- Librarians:
- introduce Ovid's interface for MEDLINE in hands-on
sessions with their assigned PBL groups.
- review general research methods and resources for PBL topics.
- attend PBL group sessions to assist in researching questions.
Second Year
Problem-Based

- Librarians provide a hands-on tutorial covering
- Advanced MEDLINE mechanics
- MeSH for P4 cases (diagnosis & therapy)
- Ovid's limits and files for evidence-based medicine.
- Students formulate & research background (PBL) and
foreground (EBM) questions.
Resources
Evidence-Based
Medicine
- Librarians and a faculty member introduce EBM resources
and the research process.
- Students explain a patient problem seen in Physical Diagnosis,
separate the search elements into PICO, distill them into
a well-built question, and search specified EBM resources
for an answer.
- Librarians evaluate their questions and search histories.
- Students discuss with their Physical-Diagnosis preceptors
how the information they gleaned might apply to their patient.

Electronically available chapters and articles for chief
complaints, diagnoses, procedures & skills associated
with the clerkships for Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology
