About These MeSH Terms

Explosions

  • Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) are organized into subject hierarchies called trees, which can be examined by clicking on the underlined MeSH on Ovid's Mapping Display or via its Tools icon on its Main Search Page.
  • MeSH can be "exploded" on MEDLINE to include more specific MeSH.
  • MeSH that can be exploded are shown above in yellow or are followed by (exp).
  • Epidemiologic Methods, for instance, can be exploded to include records tagged with any of the terms listed under it or under any of the explosions under those terms (i.e., all of the above terms except many in the last box).
  • Our Ovid MEDLINEplus automatically explodes MeSH, which it indicates with the abbreviation exp on its Search History.
Focus
  • Ovid uses an asterisk to indicate MeSH that describe the focus of an article.
  • exp *Dentistry would yield all articles focused on dentistry in general or any of its more specific terms.
  • Focusing terms in the Epidemiologic Methods tree would retrieve the relatively few articles about the method(s). For most purposes, do not focus these MeSH.
Subheadings
  • MeSH may be further modified by subheadings.
  • Ovid presents them for selection on its Subheading Display whenever one selects a single MeSH from its Mapping Display.
  • Ovid attaches subheadings to the chosen MeSH with a slash on its Search History and Complete Records, .
  • The /epidemiology subheading may be attached to disease & geographical MeSH.
  • exp Mouth Diseases /epidemiology would retrieve MEDLINE records about the occurrence of many types of oral disease.
  • exp United States /epidemiology would retrieve records about the prevalence of disease in the US & all its states.
  • MeSH /subheading combinations in Ovid's Complete Record are linked to lists of related articles, which it then posts to its Search History.
