Objectives
- To practice MEDLINE search mechanics and strategies via Ovid MEDLINE and locate research articles in the dental and medical literature.
- To become familiar with the Cochrane Collaboration and Systematic Reviews.
- To use authoritative websites to become acquainted with U.S. government resources for epidemiology statistics.
- To become familiar with the scope and relevance of the ADA’s EBD Database of Systematic Reviews.
- To identify Tufts' electronic and print holdings in order to obtain the full text of journal articles.
- To cite articles and websites with enough information to enable future retrieval.
Assignment
Overview
- Project is due
Sunday midnight, July 26, 2009.
- Research "cleft palate" using Ovid MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, government and ADA websites.
- Complete the Submission form and email to Judy Rabinowitz (judy.rabinowitz@tufts.edu)
to include:
- Ovid Search Histories with specified citations on four queries as detailed in Part I below.
- A systematic review in your specialty from the ADA Topic Index for Database of Systematic Reviews
- A U.S. government webpage dealing with statistical information on cleft palates
- Assignment accounts for 12% of course grade. One point will be deducted for late submissions.
Part I
Search Ovid's MEDLINE in four queries on "cleft palate" using appropriate search strategies as demonstrated in the library workshop.
- Logon to Ovid MEDLINE at http://www.library.tufts.edu/ezproxy/ezproxy.asp?LOCATION=ovid.
- Search for and cite:
- A meta-analysis on the diagnosis of cleft palate.
- An article available electronically at Tufts which deals with the epidemiology of cleft palate in the U.S.
- An article on the dental management of patients with cleft palates.
- A Cochrane Systematic Review on the treatment of cleft palate.
- After each search, email yourself the search history and your chosen citation.
- MEDLINE Search Techniques
- Search complete MEDLINE file <1950 - present>
- Use MeSH and subheadings whenever possible.
- For suggested MeSH and subheadings and other information about searching MEDLINE, see MeSH for Dental Epidemiology (http://www.library.tufts.edu/hhsl/education/depimesh.html)
- Apply the specified limits.
- As you complete each MEDLINE search, email yourself the selected citation using Ovid’s Results Manager as follows
- Check (Citation Title,Author,Source) under Fields.
- Check Include Search History.
- Click Email button under Actions and complete the next screen.
- For detailed instructions see Managing Ovid Output.
- Copy and paste your search histories and citations into the Submission form.
Part II
- Locate a systematic review in your specialty from the ADA Topic Index for Database of Systematic Reviews available at: http://ebd.ada.org/SystematicReviews.aspx
- Copy/paste the citation onto the Submission Form
- Locate a U.S. government webpage dealing with statistical information on cleft palates. See Dental Epidemiology Resources at http://www.library.tufts.edu/hhsl/education/dentalepiweb.html.
- Cite the webpage on the Submission form including the following elements:
- Author/agency responsible for the site
- Title of relevant Webpage
- URL
- Date accessed
- Example of reference:

Submission
- Download and complete the Submission form:
- Your full name
- 4 Ovid Search Histories, each with a relevant citation and numbered to match the queries above
- 1 citation to a systematic review listed in the the ADA Topic Index for Database of Systematic Reviews
- 1 citation to a U.S. government webpage dealing with cleft palate statistics
- Save the file as LastnameFirstname.doc, e.g. DoeJane.doc.
- Send your file as an email attachment to judy.rabinowitz@tufts.edu by Sunday midnight, July 26th.
- If you do not receive confirmation within one week, please re-send it.

Grading
Twelve points are possible for this assignment, which accounts
for 12% of the course grade. One point will be deducted for late submissions and for each of
the following:
- MeSH for disease is not used for any query
- Limit to meta analysis is not used for Query 1
- MeSH for geographic region is not used for Query 2
- Source for Query 2 is not available electronic full-text from Tufts
- Relevant subheadings are not used for Queries 1, 2, 4
- Limit to Local Holdings is not used for Query 2
- The concept of dental management is not expressed either through MeSH or limits in Query 3
- Limit to Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is not applied for Query 4
- Relevant article is not cited for Queries 1-4
- A complete citation from the ADA Topic Index for Database of Systematic Reviews to a relevant systematic review is not included
- Statistical government website on cleft palate does not include all citation elements
- The complete MEDLINE file <1950 - present> is not used.
