• Wildcard: single asterisk (*)
  • Retrieves 0-5 characters in place of the asterisk. Two asterisks (**) replaces an infinite number of characters.
  • Useful for retrieving documents with British and American word variants. For example:
    colo*r retrieves documents with the words color and colour.

Ovid (MEDLINE, EBM Reviews, PsychINFO, CANCERLIT, et al.)

• Unlimited truncation: dollar sign ($) or colon (:)
  • Retrieves any number of characters after the word stem or no characters.
  • Example: disease$ retrieves the word disease, as well as the words diseases, diseased, etc.
• Wildcard: question mark (?)
• Use within or at the end of a word to substitute for one character or no characters.
• Useful for retrieving documents with British and American word variants.
• Example: colo?r retrieves documents with the words color and colour.

PubMed

• Unlimited Truncation: asterisk (*)
  • Searches for the first 150 variations of a truncated term. Displays a warning message if a truncated term, e.g., staph*, produces more than 150 variations.

Note: Truncation turns off automatic term mapping and the automatic explosion of a MeSH term. For example, heart attack* will not map to the MeSH term Myocardial Infarction or include any of the more specific terms, e.g., Myocardial Stunning or Shock Cardiogenic.

By default, a search includes common alternate endings of words, such as -s, -ies, -ing, etc.

Truncation is accomplished using the following search options found at the bottom of the search screen:

• Include Synonyms: Results will include matches for words in the search box, as well as synonyms for those words.
  • Example: Searching for heart with Include Synonyms checked will also find cardiac.
• Include Suffixes: Results will include matches for words in the search box, as well as matches with various suffixes.
  • Example: Searching for disease with Include Suffixes checked will also find diseased and diseases.
