SPIRAL: Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages
is a
joint initiative of the South Cove Community
Health Center and Tufts
University Hirsh Health Sciences Library is supported by a grant from
the New England Region
of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine under contract NLM-00-101/SMS.
The project aims to:
- increase electronic access to health information for consumers and
health
care providers of the South Cove Community
Health Center and its
affiliates by developing a web site to meet the information needs of
the
South Cove community.
- provide consumer information in the languages of the community served,
specifically Chinese, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Laotian.
- teach health care providers to use the wide variety of Internet resources
available to them and their patients including National Library of Medicine
and Tufts University resources.
South Cove Community Health Center
('South Cove') is New England's premier
primary and preventive health center for Asian Americans. Founded in 1972,
South Cove provides medical and behavioral health services and youth and
family programs for approximately 12,000 clients at six locations in the
greater
Boston area. South Cove's current mission is to improve the health and
well-being of Asian Americans in Massachusetts, with a special focus on
the
medically underserved by providing high quality, community-based health
care
and programs which are accessible and linguistically and culturally competent
for these populations.
The Tufts University Hirsh
Health Sciences Library serves the Schools of Medicine
and Dental Medicine, the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences,
the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging,
the Tufts Medical Center and other institutions affiliated with
Tufts.
