Tufts libraries celebrated its One Millionth Volume milestone on April 6, 2000. The one millionth volume, Lois Gibbs's Love Canal: The Story Continues..., was officically presented at this event. Over the years Tufts has made a substantial investment to reach this significance achievement. The library began 148 years ago with President Ballou's collection, now the cornerstone of the University Archives and Special Collections.
Today the libraries play a crucial role in supporting the mission of Tufts University to help students grow as intellectually curious and critically involved members of society with a lifelong commitment to learning. In the new millennium, the libraries will continue to act as a gateway to knowledge, both within and outside their physical walls. Tufts University is committed to building on its current resources and continuing to support the libraries in fulfilling their important mission.

Lois Gibbs, nationally known environmental leader, was the featured speaker at the One Millionth Volume Celebration. In the spring of 1978, Lois was a 27-year-old housewife who organized her neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association after learning that her child's elementary school in Niagra Falls, NY was built on top of a chemical dump.
Lois created the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice in 1981 (formerly Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste), which has assisted over 8,000 grassroots environmental organizations. Tufts University Archives became the repository for these records in 1988 as a testament to Tufts' deomnstrated leadership role in environmental affairs and citizen patrticipation.
