A digital health sciences library from the University of Iowa. The Virtual Hospital contains textbooks and booklets for health care providers and patients.

A library’s catalog covers most aspects of a subject over centuries of publications in many languages. Catalogs can be searched by author, title, subject, and keyword. Tisch Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification scheme. LC classification brings similar books together on the shelves, which facilitates browsing. Books on Occupational Therapy are classified in RM 735. Psychology is classified in BF.

Resource for health-related research. Provides access to a collection of general interest health and fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, reference books and pamphlets.

MDX Health Digest. First Search. 1988-
Index to consumer health information.

MEDLINE. Ovid, 1966- Old Medline, 1951-1965. How To Use
National Library of Medicine’s bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and preclinical sciences.

PubMED. NLM.
A service of the National Library of Medicine; provides access to over 12 million MEDLINE citations back to the mid-1960s and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full-text articles and other related resources.

AARP AgeLine. OVID. 1978- How To Use
Provides bibliographic references and original abstracts for materials related to aging and middle age, from an interdisciplinary perspective of psychology, economics, sociology, gerontology, public policy, business, health and health care services, and consumer issues.

ERIC. Cambridge Scientific Abstracts/IDS. 1966-
Database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education to provide extensive access to education-related literature.

Sociological Abstracts. Cambridge Scientific Abstracts/IDS. 1963-
Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Provides abstracts of journal articles and citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,700 serials publications, and also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference papers.

PsycINFO. OVID. 1872- How To Use
Provides citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, dissertations, and technical reports in the field of psychology and the psychological aspects of related disciplines such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, education, physiology, linguistics, and law.

PILOTS
The PILOTS (Published International Literature On Traumatic Stress ) bibliographic database, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, includes citations to literature on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events, without disciplinary, linguistic, or geographical limitations, and offers both current and retrospective coverage.

Electronic journals

Periodicals are listed in the library catalog. Holdings in all formats are unified in one record, and most entries for journals held in electronic format contain a hyperlink to the source. In the 1980s the World Wide Web emerged and spawned publications of its own, independent of the print traditions. Information retrieved from the open web must be reviewed for authority, accuracy and authenticity. Keeping these limitations in mind, there are some excellent information resources available from the open web, especially those associated with government agencies and universities. Assistive Technology

ABLEDATA
Federally funded project whose primary mission is to provide information on assistive technology and rehabilitation equipment. Their site contains information on more than 29,000 assistive technology products and vendors, an assistive technology library, news, and conference information.

Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST)
Serves as an information clearinghouse on UK assistive technology research, publications, conferences, and news.

Disabled Living Foundation
Source of information on disability equipment, day-to-day household gadgets, new technologies and training techniques. Based in UK.

Adaptive Technology Resource Centre
University of Toronto organization that assists individuals in choosing and using assistive technologies, supports making learning accessible to all people with disabilities, and ensures design of emerging technologies that consider users with disabilities. Site includes help in choosing products, updates on current technology projects, and links to online resources.

Evidence-Based Practice

Bandolier Evidence Based Healthcare
A print and internet journal about health care, using evidence-based medicine techniques to provide advice about particular treatments or diseases for healthcare professionals and consumers. Site includes access to the journal Bandolier, topic resources, and EBM essays.

A commercial website that offers personalized health care information and management.

MedHunt: Medical Document Finder
A dedicated medical full-text search engine, using a global database, which includes annotated and auto-indexed websites. From Health On the Net, a Swiss foundation. Also in French.

MEDLINEplus Health Information
Brings together, by health topic, authoritative information from National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, other government, non-profit and health-related organizations.

Medscape. WebMD.
Commercial website for physicians and healthcare professionals offering peer-reviewed articles, reference tools, treatment updates, and medical and clinical information.

National Health Information Center (NHIC)
A health information referral service sponsored by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. NHIC puts health professionals and consumers who have health questions in touch with those organizations that are best able to provide answers.

NLM Gateway
A web-based system that lets users search simultaneously in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).
