Tisch Library Graduate Student Research Fellowships in the Humanities and the Arts

These two fellowships support the dissertation or thesis research of one doctoral student and one terminal master’s degree student working in the humanities and the arts within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The aim of the fellowship is to promote the use of Tisch Library collections and services and to support graduate research in the humanities/arts. Each fellowship offers a stipend of $4,000 for summer research. The award will be given in 2 parts: $3,500 in May and an additional $500 after a presentation open to the Tufts community in the early fall.
Fellowship stipends will support summer research beginning in May 2013 and ending in August 2013. The award supports living expenses for summer research and does not cover travel. In addition to the stipend, fellows will receive the following:
- A librarian consultant who will help with the use of Tisch resources and will provide assistance with access to other needed collections.
- Study space in the form of a cubicle in the Collections/Research & Instruction area in Tisch Library.
- The applicant must be doing research for a doctoral degree in Drama, English, or History OR for a terminal master’s in Art History, Classics, History, or Music.
- The applicant must be in good academic standing as defined by the rules of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
- During the award period the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student as defined by the rules of the Graduate School.
- An applicant may be of any nationality.
- A letter of nomination from the department.
- A letter from the student's dissertation/thesis director, evaluating the student's work done at Tufts and progress towards the completion of the degree. Include details about the merit of the student's project.
- A 2-3 page statement of purpose from the student describing the research topic, research strategies, and the application of Tisch Library tools and resources to be used in completion of the project.
- Copy of the student's Tufts transcript.
- Sophistication, originality, or unusual depth or breadth in the use of library collections, including printed resources, databases, primary sources, and materials in all media.
- Research drawing upon rare or unique sources at Tufts, while not required, will be of particular interest.
- Clarity and completeness of the research plan.
- Significance of the research topic to thought and knowledge in the applicant’s fields.

Criteria are of two kinds, those that promote the library's aims and those that indicate noteworthy academic qualities.
Selection
The selection committee will include the Director of CHAT, members of the Advisory board to CHAT, the Dean of the Graduate School as an ex officio member, and 2 Tisch librarians. The Director of the Center for the Humanities at Tufts will serve as chair of the committee.
