Fifth Annual Berger Family Technology

Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Medford, MA, May 1, 2002- The fifth annual grant from the Tufts University Berger Family Technology Endowment has been awarded to "The Frédéric Louis Ritter Collection: A Paradigm for Special Collections Access and Use" submitted by Michael J. Rogan, Music Librarian, Tisch Library; Jane Bernstein, Austin Fletcher Professor of Music, Department of Music; Gregory Colati, Director, Digital Collections and Archives and University Archivist; Thomas Cox, Web Designer, Library Information Technology Support, Tisch Library. The Berger award is a result of a competitive proposal process that provides funding of $50,000.00 annually. The Berger family established the endowment to retrain library staff to function in the increasingly high technology world of the digital library and to prepare students and faculty to effectively use this technology. It is believed that the endowment is the first of its kind to train library staff and faculty in new technology.

The project will demonstrate how technology can make accessible unique source material in a significant special collection at Tufts, the Frédéric Louis Ritter Collection, so it can be used in new and exciting ways to enhance undergraduate education. A series of colloquia will be given focusing on item(s) selected from the Ritter Collection by nationally recognized music scholars who are interested in enhancing teaching through technology. A website will be created containing the selected scanned item(s), a Finding Aid to the collection and each scholar's paper. Any additional contextual information created or identified, such as digital audio files of musical performance, or other editions of selected scores or treatises that are available on the web (such as Gallica, the online image repository of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France), will also be linked to the Ritter website. In effect, the invited scholars will be promoting the use of the Ritter Collection by highlighting some of its treasures, demonstrating new research and teaching methods using technology, and providing a model for Tufts graduate students who will be encouraged to develop new expectations for the use of special collections.

The Berger Family has been a generous donor to Tufts University. Over the years, they have contributed to the renovation of Tisch Library and established an endowed professorship in the College of Engineering. Members of the Berger Family Technology Transfer Endowment Advisory Board are: Amy Friedlander, the representative of the Berger Family and Special Projects Associate at the Council of Library and Information Resources, Library of Congress in Washington, DC; Susan Martin, President of SKM Associates, Inc., Marstons Mills, MA and member of the Arts & Sciences Overseers; Ioannis Miaoulis, Dean of Engineering and Associate Provost; Susan Ernst, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences; Professor Howard Malchow, Chair, Library Committee; Professor Kent Portney, Chair of the Computer Facilities and Usage Committee; Professor Greg Crane, Winnick Family Chair in Technology & Entrepreneurship; Jo-Ann Michalak, Director of Tisch Library.

A copy of "The Frédéric Louis Ritter Collection: A Paradigm for Special Collections Access and Use" is located on the Web; in addition, please see the Berger website.
