Where once flashy, animated screen shots were considered de rigueur, current and proven design strategy emphasizes maximum access to information through an architecture that is both easy to learn and efficient to use. We are pleased to announce that with the 2003 redesign, the Tisch Library website embraces these changes and remains an essential resource for the Tufts community.
Highlighted here are six areas of improvement in the newly designed Tisch Library website:
Improved Home-Page Navigation
Comprehensive usability testing of the former Tisch pages has revealed that when navigating a site, most users prefer to see their choices up front rather than have them hidden behind a dynamic pop-out menu. The new design presents navigation choices via five clear and concise menus: Searching, Research Assistance, Borrowing, Other Services, and About Us. Much effort went into making sure that the terminology used in these menus matches user expectation and common practice. In preparation for redesign, a large sample of sister library websites was examined.
Breadcrumb Navigation
Getting to a desired page on a website is often only part of the task before a user. Tracing steps back to the point of origin or seeing related pages can be just as critical. The Tisch web site now makes use of a standard information design convention called breadcrumb navigation. From each page, users can see not only where they are but also where they ve been.
Ask a Librarian
While the web is a great tool for accessing information, it cannot replace the experience and expertise of a trained professional. At Tisch, we have striven to meet the needs of today s population by providing access to our professional staff in three ways (in addition to on-site reference): by phone, by email, and by live 24/7 chat. Links to these routes of access appear on every Tisch webpage.
New Research Guides by Subject
All subject guides have been updated. The guides are the perfect place to start research in a particular discipline. They list the major print and electronic resources in the discipline, link to major websites, and also include links to subject and database-specific research assistance.
Research Assistance
Wholly revamped assistance is provided through specialized help for all major types of users: undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. There are now step-by-step quick tips for conducting research in an efficient, systematic way, and feedback and contact us links are more prominent.
Search This Site
Site searching, made popular by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and AltaVista, has become a mainstay, and often first-choice approach, of the experienced user. Users accustomed to searching the library catalog will now be able to search the site for information as well.
For more about these features, link to Demo here and then to "Preview the new site now."

Return to Contents

ILLiad Improves ILL Efficiency

ILLiad, a new web-based interlibrary loan system, has been implemented by the Tufts libraries. (Due to construction, the Health Sciences Library is delaying its ILLiad implementation.) ILLiad offers time-saving enhancements to current ILL procedures that you will appreciate:
Register Once
Previously you had to complete a lengthy form with all your personal information every time you made an ILL request. To use ILLiad, you must register for a password-protected account. Every time you make a request, your personal information is provided automatically.
Note: You are eligible to submit requests while you are a current member of the Tufts community as teaching faculty, employed staff or actively enrolled student.
Faster Turnaround Time
ILLiad enables library staff to process requests in a more timely and accurate manner. Most manual work (such as re-keying request information and contacting users) has been eliminated due to ILLiad s many automated features. Staff are also able to track and answer questions concerning requests more efficiently in ILLiad s searchable database. In short, ILLiad enables library staff to provide a higher level of service to you.
Ease of Use
ILLiad is completely menu-driven, using typical web navigation.
Track and Cancel
ILLiad allows you to track requests in order to estimate document arrival time. Additionally, you can cancel requests up until the time they leave the lending library.
View Request History
You are able to see titles you have requested in the past. NOTE: Periodically, these lists are purged from the system.
Receive Articles Electronically, When Possible
Electronically delivered articles can be viewed when you log into your ILLiad account. You will have thirty days to read, download, and/or print these materials.
The new system has already received glowing reviews. One such comment comes from Music professor Jane Bernstein: Hooray!!! Just what I've been waiting for I sometimes got the feeling that my requests were lost in cyberspace now I can track them and don't have to fill out the form each time!
Please Note: ILLiad will not run on a browser older than Netscape 7 or Internet Explorer 5.
For more information, visit, email or call the Tisch Library Reference Desk (617-627-3460) or Document Delivery Services (617-627-3206).

Return to Contents

Instruction for Large Classes

Well, maybe not that large!

Exam in Counsens Gym, ca. 1946
Photo courtesy of Tufts History Collection. During this fifty-minute session, organized with Psyc 1 instructors and held during a lab period, students are introduced to research methods for identifying and obtaining scholarly articles in psychology. The workshops are invaluable for students who need to learn how to use psychology resources systematically. Psyc 1 students have evaluated the workshop by such statements as: I am better prepared because I had no prior knowledge of these resources. Now I feel more confident that I will find suitable information when I need to do my assignment, and I m much better prepared. Previously I d been intimidated by online databases but now I realize they are very easy and helpful to use.
Dr. Phil Holcomb, Psyc 1 faculty member, has said: The Psychology 1 instructor team feels very strongly that the library sessions have become an increasingly important part of our students' learning experience. We now know that the students who engage in these sessions learn more about the online services available through the library and then end up writing much better papers. We also now know that these students save an enormous amount of time and go on to use the skills in their more advanced courses. We would very much like for this service to become a permanent component of Psychology 1.
And teaching assistant Yvonne Wakeford concurs: The students in 'Introduction to Psychology' benefit greatly from the library workshops. Most & have not been exposed to experimental journals prior to the workshop. They find Tisch a little intimidating& . The workshop provides them with tools and the confidence to find what they need ... not only for the Introduction to Psychology course& . The knowledge gained benefits them throughout their academic career.
These sessions have been held in the Tisch Electronic Resource Center, which can accommodate about thirty students at a time, but even larger classes have met at a single time in other locations wired for web access and projection.
Whether your class is small or large, a survey or upper-division course, consider building in time for a library workshop. Your students will have reason to thank you for it!

Return to Contents

Two New Electronic Resources

The Tisch Library has acquired two valuable electronic resources for the Tufts community, the Wall Street Journal and The Nation Digital Archive. Both may be reached through either the Tufts Library catalog or the Databases and Articles A-Z list on the Tisch home page. The Wall Street Journal is available through ProQuest and can be searched from 1984 through the present day. This premier financial newspaper can be searched by keyword or by subject, with each full-text article presented together with its subject terms and its abstract. While abstracts of articles in the Wall Street Journal have been included in LexisNexis, this purchase gives library patrons access to the complete articles for the first time.
The Nation Digital Archive covers over 135 years of contents from America s oldest continuously published weekly magazine. Searchable by keyword and indexed by article type, this full-text archive is an indispensable resource for studying the cultural and political history of the United States, and, frankly, simply a pleasure to browse through. Book, journal and video reviews; fiction, letters, and poetry; puzzles, editorials, editorial cartoons, and articles on international relations and finance everything from prohibition to civil rights to art criticism can be found in this collection of political and cultural writing since 1865.

Return to Contents

Pay-for-Printing Implemented

Over the summer, the Tisch Library, Ginn Library, and Eaton Lab implemented pay-for-printing. This move was necessitated by increased printing costs, the ongoing shift from print to electronic resources, the competing demands placed on library budgets, and environmental factors.
Pay-for-printing uses the same card system as the photocopying machines with the same price structure of ten cents per page. High-volume discount cards may be purchased in the Tisch Administrative Services Office, M-F 9-5.
Patrons who do not wish to print on site can download to a floppy disk or e-mail the material to themselves for later printing. For the fall semester, a card worth 100 pages of free printing/photocopying will be given to every AS&E student who wants one. The card may be picked up in the Eaton Computer Lab upon presentation of the student s ID.

Return to Contents

Level G Construction to be Completed by Spring Semester

Tisch Library is pleased to announce that, with construction beginning this fall, Level G will be finished out by spring with carpeting, overhead lighting, compact shelving and seating. Users will be able to access collections in this area directly, no longer having to page little-used scholarly journals. In addition to compact shelving for collection growth, there will be increased user study space. With the completion of Level G, the shelving capacity of Tisch Library will expand to one million volumes to support undergraduate and graduate student learning and faculty research. The Tisch Library Space Team is charged with developing detailed plans for the area and the collection move.
JoAnn Giffuni Wellner, A63, who is Chair of the Friends of Tufts Libraries, has provided the lead gift in honor of her 40th class reunion and has challenged her fellow alums and Friends to match her gift and finish out Level G.

Return to Contents

Lincoln Exhibit Slated for October 12 December 2, 2005

In 2005 Tisch Library will host the traveling exhibition Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation.
Recently, grants-writing trio Beverly Gobiel, Stephen McDonald and Stephanie St. Laurence, all members of the Tisch Library staff, received the nod from the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities to announce that the exhibition will be at Tufts from October 12 December 2, 2005. Already, this major display has garnered significant interest from the Tufts community and beyond with sponsorships from the Tufts History and Music Departments and local historical societies and museums, as well as an endorsement from Professor Gerald Gill, who will be a featured speaker during the six-week event. The Forever Free Steering Committee has begun tackling the challenges of developing proposed ancillary programs and raising the additional funding needed to make them happen. It is with great enthusiasm that we look forward to this exciting event.
