Through her living history portrayals, Jan Turnquist brings alive two of the most famous women of the Civil War era.  An educator, actress and historian, Jan is the founder and director of InterAct Performances, and a consultant to Orchard House is Concord, Massachusetts.

Friends of Tufts' Libraries welcomes Nina Silber to a discussion of her most recently released book, Daughters of the Union: Northern Women Fight the Civil War (spring, 2005).  Ms. Silber, an Associate Professor of History at Boston University, received rave reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist for her “...provocative, challenging work...” that “...writes ordinary women onto the page and reshapes the boundaries of Civil War history.”  A question and answer session and book-signing will follow.

Civil War Camp Life
Lt. Colonel Paul Kenworthy and Private Patri Pugliese of the Union Army provide a glimpse of camp life during the American Civil War. A typical officers wall tent and enlisted man's "dog tent" will be displayed with typical furnishings and objects that one would have expected to see in a military camp. This encampment will visit the Tufts Medford/Somerville campus several times, so keep checking our website for updates.

Professor Elizabeth Ammons will talk about "Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Risks of Activism: Stowe, Lincoln, and the 21st Century," to be followed by discussion.  Focusing on the conflicting issues of abolition and racism in Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous novel, which Lincoln reportedly said "started the great war," Professor Ammons will ask what the lessons are for activists today.  What's to be learned from Uncle Tom's Cabin in the struggle now against the war in Iraq, or the effort to save the environment, or the continuing fight against racism, homophobia, and misogyny?
