Welcome to Tisch Talks, Tisch Library’s ongoing audio magazine.
This is the 9th podcast in the Tisch Talks series.
Welcome Back! to returning students and patrons of Tisch Library. We hope this podcast will help to keep you updated about changes to some important resources within the library.
If you have not been to our library before, we welcome you now and hope this podcast serves as an introduction to a handful of the many services offered at Tisch.
When you pass through the lobby and enter the Reference Area, you will find the collaborative workstations. Funded by the Friends of Tufts Libraries, both workstations have oversized monitors with a wireless mouse and keyboard, and seating for 4-6 users. New this year is the addition of white boards separating the two stations, providing an added medium for shared information as well as some privacy for your group. Markers and erasers are available from the Circulation desk with a current Tufts ID. Sign-in sheets at the workstations should be used when you need to reserve a convenient time for all members of your group.
Tisch Library’s productivity computers will be more compatible by the start of the fall semester with the installation of Microsoft Office 2007. Also located in the reference area, these 4 machines with word processing, Excel and Power Point capabilities, aim to increase your productivity while doing research. Office 2007 is also installed on both of the collaborative workstations.
In order to keep up with student demand, we have increased the number of computers in our Laptop Lending program from 5 to 10, and students with a current Tufts ID are able to check these out at the Circulation Desk. The laptops provide Microsoft Office software as well as wireless networking and printing options, and are configured for ease of use. Upon first boot, the laptop launches a brief multimedia presentation highlighting important tips and system features.
Changes are also being made to ILLIAD, Tisch Library’s document delivery service. Along with other new features, the upgraded software will have a new interface and will make it easier for you to keep track of your outstanding requests. This updated version of ILLIAD will be in place for the start of the fall semester and can be accessed from the Tisch Library home page under “Borrowing”, and from there click on “other libraries.” The direct url is https://illiad.library.tufts.edu/illiad/TFW/logon.html. A podcast describing the updated ILLIAD and other document delivery services will soon be available.
The Tisch Library home page, found at www.library.tufts.edu/tisch has also changed with the creation of an additional category, entitled “Media,” that contains links to information on the following:
The first item under this new heading is the Media Center. At www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/media_center.htm, you’ll find a brief description of the Berenstein Media Center, the types of materials that are available there, contact information, and hours of operation. There is also a link that brings you to the Media Center’s latest acquisitions.
Also listed in this group is the Lilly Music Library, which is a branch of the Tisch library. Following the url www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/music_library.htm provides you with location and contact information, and links to online music resources accessible from this site.
Anything of interest that is happening in the library can be found in the Tisch Newsletter, which is the third item under “Media.” After clicking on the newsletter link (www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/bibliotech/bibliotech.htm), you are then able to choose any issue from the most current back to 1996. Officially known as BiblioTech Connections, this publication is written by Tisch staff and provides information on a variety of topics such as descriptions of newly acquired resources, as well as important issues both on and off campus that affect the library and its patrons.
“Podcasts” are new here at Tisch, so it is only fitting to find them under this new category. www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/tischTalks.html connects you to all issues of the “Tisch Talks” series, covering a host of subjects from an introduction to the library building, to instructions on how to find articles in a periodical. This site supplies you with an RSS feed address allowing you to automatically receive new episodes when published. You can also listen to the Tisch Talks series from any computer that has audio player software plug-ins such as Quicktime or Windows Media Player, and speakers or a headset. When listening from inside the library, headsets are available from the Reference desk.
The last item under the Media heading is the Tisch Turns Ten Movie. This film was prepared entirely by library staff in commemoration of Tisch Library’s 10th anniversary, which was officially celebrated on October 10th 2006. The 30 minute documentary tells the story of the library’s construction, and how Tisch continues to ensure its relevance for the next generation students, faculty and staff. The Tisch Turns Ten link, www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/about/tischTurnsTen.html, connects you to the movie which will then automatically begin.
Thank you for listening to Tisch Talks. If you have questions concerning this podcast reviewing changes recently implemented at Tisch, or about any other library services, we invite you to either visit the Tisch Library Reference Desk, or to call us at 617-627-3460.
We look forward to hearing from you.
