Harvard Letters
Access to the collections in the Harvard University library system varies according to both the particular library and the researcher's status. For information on a particular library's policy, visit its website.
The following applies to Widener Library (Harvard's main library):
- Tufts faculty and professional staff are eligible for a limited amount of reading room privileges by presenting their Tufts ID card at the library. For more extensive research, Tisch Library will purchase an annual Widener library card for full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty who can demonstrate that Harvard is the only institution in the area which has the resources needed for their research. Contact Laura Walters, Associate Director, at laura.walters@tufts.edu for more details.
- Tufts Ph.D. Candidates require a letter from their thesis advisor confirming that they are in the process of writing a dissertation along with their graduate student ID card. They also may use this letter and their ID card to purchase an
HCL Special Borrower Card.
- Tufts undergraduate and masters students must obtain a letter from a faculty member stating that the student needs to use Harvard's resources. The letter should be presented to the Tisch Library Reference desk, where the student will be given a form to take to Harvard. Contact Evan Simpson, Head of Reference, at evan.simpson@tufts.edu for more details.
Items in Harvard's circulating collection usually may be obtained through Tufts' Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) program.
