A library’s catalog covers most aspects of a subject over centuries of publications in many languages. Catalogs can be searched by author, title, subject, and keyword. Tisch Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification scheme. LC classification brings similar books together on the shelves, which facilitates browsing. Books on Engineering are classified primarily in T (Technology) but many related sources are classified in QA (Mathematics), QA75.5-76 (Computer science), QC (Physics), and QD Chemistry and other sub-classes of the Q (Science) class.

purchasing.
Document Delivery
Borrow from other libraries, both books and journal articles.
All print and most electronic periodicals are listed in the library catalog. Holdings in all formats are unified in one record, and most entries for journals held in electronic format contain a hyperlink to the source. Searches in the web-based catalog enable one to follow these links directly. A complete list of electronic journals is on the Tisch homepage under E-Journal Titles. If Tufts does not subscribe directly to a title, you can search for it in WorldCat or in Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory, which lists where periodicals are indexed or abstracted and often includes the publisher's website.
You can locate articles through Tisch's online article databases. Some of these database offer full text; others provide indexing or abstracting services only. Database Searching Tips (also available in PDF format) provides valuable information on how to construct effective searches in some of the major databases.
An increasing number of electronic indexes and article databases provide digitized versions of their contents since publication began. For those that do not, you may have to place an order through Tufts Document Delivery Services. A select group of indexes for major engineering and science publications is available in the print format in the Reference Indexes section of Tisch; consult the library catalog for their exact location.
Indexes

Engineering Village (EV)
The premier index for engineering literature, EV from Elsevier covers all areas of engineering going back to 1884 and includes journal articles, conference proceedings, reports, dissertations, and early patents, in multiple languages. EV comprises covers two databases; both cover all areas of engineering but each has particular strengths. Compendex is especially
strong in civil, chemical, and mechanical engineering. INSPEC focuses on electrical, electronics, and computer engineering as well as physics.
The print versions of these databases [Engineering Index (1884-1999), Electrical & Electronics Abstracts (1908-1991), Computer & Control Abstracts (1969-1991), and Physics Abstracts (1906- )] are available in the Reference Index section of Tisch.
SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)
A proprietary software client that provides access to Chemical
Abstracts, a major database for all of chemistry published by the American Chemical Society. SciFinder Scholar
provides for both regular and substructure searching. Updated
version 2002 includes access to MEDLINE and OLD MEDLINE databases.
To use, the software needs to be downloaded onto your PC (at least
a Pentium processor) or Mac (needs Power PC processor) within
the Tufts campus. At this time home use is not supported by Tufts.
This database is to be used for research purposes only and there
is a limit on how many records may be downloaded. Commercial use
is forbidden. Tufts users have access to 3 ports, simultaneously,
on a 24 hour basis. Users should log out as soon as searches are
completed. Installation or upgrade to SciFinder Scholar 2002.

including the Science
Citation Index. Although it is more science- than engineering-oriented,
it does contain a valuable engineering-related material.
Unlike most indexing services, it allows you to determine how
a particular paper was cited after it was published and includes tools for tracking citation metrics.
Collections of Electronic Journals
Many professional societies and commercial publishers offer all of their web journal titles through a common interface. All of them allow you to search for articles like the indexes listed above. Be aware, though, that you are searching only the publications of a particular publisher, not all of the relevant literature.
