The Assignment

Locate a minimum of two, a maximum of four, primary sources concerning the history, including origin, of your most absorbing nonacademic interest.

Write a three-five-page essay of comparison/contrast.  Use a minimum of three other modes:  description, narration, classification, division, definition, cause/effect, argument.

What Are Primary Sources?

The body of first-hand accounts, observations, written, oral, or visual, created during the time period in question are collectively referred to as primary sources; these also include original data recorded.

Secondary sources are works that comment on, analyze, summarize, or interpret the material found in primary sources.

Some sources may serve as either primary or secondary sources, depending upon how you use them. For instance, newspapers can function as primary or secondary sources. If you use a newspaper article as a source of information, it’s a secondary source. If you analyze the way a newspaper article represents something, or treat these articles as cultural artifacts of a past time, it’s a primary source.

Sample Interest: Camping.

1. Start with browsing the Tufts library Catalog on your topic.

The Catalog's classification of knowledge on your topic and/or organization of types of publications (primary sources) may suggest a focused question for you to pursue:

2. A subject browses on Camping in the catalog shows that, among other studies on camping, there are publications (books) on Camp sites, facilities, etc., Camping Equipment and supplies, and Handbooks, Manuals, Etc. You might want to examine primary sources as records/artifacts of how people went camping throughout history. Here are some titles, among other possibilities:

The L. L. Bean Guide to the Outdoors. Location: Ref. GV191.76 .R58
The National Parks, Camping Guide. Location: Ref. GV191.35 .N34

You can also use certain contents in books for the historical facts. For example, catalogs of equipment and so on listed in earlier books on camping:

America's Camping Book. Location: Stack: SK601 .C178 1969
Guidance in Summer Camping. Location: University Archives: LD5391.7 .A2 NO.268 1939
Skyline Camps; a Note Book of a Wanderer in Our North Western Mountains. Location: Stack: F852 .E14 1922

3. There may not always be the "perfect" monograph (a book treating a singular topic), so you need to look for books, in which your topic is part of a broader discussion. (thematic studies composed of unrelated essays, or of chapters of a sustained argument).

This sample search looks for all sports, but any single type in the Catalog: su:(manual* or handbook*) and su:sport* (su: searches for words as subject indexing terms in the Catalog.)

The Rule Book: the Authoritative, Up-to-Date, Illustrated Guide to the Regulations, History, and Object of All Major Sports. Location: Ref. GV731 .R75 1983.

4. When you have one relevant book, go to the Bookstacks and browse for other books next to yours. Often times, you will be pleasantly surprised by other titles nearby.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online

"OED," is generally considered the world's most authoritative and comprehensive guide to the evolution of the English language over the last millennium.  It started as a ten volume set first published in 1928; it grew to 20 volumes by its 2nd edition printed in 1989; and its 3-volume Additions Series were published in 1993 (volumes 1 and 2) and 1997 (volume 3).

Between one and two thousand new and revised entries are added to the online Dictionary every quarter, replacing older versions from the Second Edition and Additions Series.

The OED focuses on "historical principles", in its original editors' famous phrase. That is to say it strives to provide every known meaning of a word and it lists these meanings chronologically.

Each meaning is illustrated with quotations that are drawn from a wide range of sources: from Shakespeare's plays and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books, and much, much more.

Here are the OED Online entries on "Hang out" and "Work-out"

hang out v. intr. slang (in early use chiefly U.S.), to spend or pass time, esp. habitually, idly, or at leisure, usually at a specified place or with specified company; to socialize informally, esp. as part of a peer group; (of two or more people) to associate, spend time together; freq. with at, with, etc.

orig. and chiefly U.S. slang. To pass time idly or aimlessly; to associate or socialize informally with (esp. as part of a peer group). Cf. earlier hang out vb. at Additions.
