"Asia" in the Mind of the West (JPN192-05)
Professor Susan Napier, Spring 2008

"How has the Western imagination constructed “Asia”? As ancient civilizations? As the inscrutable enemy? As the exotic/erotic Other? This course examine the role of Asia in the Western mind over the last two centuries.

"Paper topics should be related to Japan and involve some aspect of the framework of this course, such as transcultural flows, power dynamics (soft or hard), cultural, racial, or gender stereotyping, or literary or artistic constructions of the Other (in high or popular culture)."
