Women's History Exhibit (Posted April 24, 2003)

Women's History on Campus: the Jackson School and Women's Education at Tufts
Did you know that the first female graduate of Tufts received her degree in 1893 -- sixty years after Oberlin College opened and became the first collegiate institution to admit women? Did you also know this pioneering woman was born in a house on Professors Row where the Mayer Campus Center now stands? On April 24, 2003, Tisch Library presents an exhibit highlighting the history of undergraduate women at Tufts. This exhibit examines how Tufts evolved to become a coeducational university and how women experienced campus life, from the beginning of Jackson College to Title IX. Artifacts and historical photos from the Digital Collections and Archives are on display.

(The rain location is Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library.) Tufts Poets include John Holmes, John Ciardi, X. J. Kennedy, Denise Levertov, Jane Shore, Philip Levine and Deborah Digges. New Printing System (Posted March 27, 2003)

Tisch Library and Eaton Lab have started phase 1 of the Pay-for-Printing implementation. Users will not be charged for printing in phase 1, which will be used as an opportunity to educate users in the use of the system. When printing materials, a user will be asked for his name (first name is sufficient) and also asked to name the print job. The job is then placed in the printer queue. The user goes to either of the two printer release stations next to the printers and puts in his name. This brings up his print job, which he then "releases" to the printer. So far, users have found the system very easy to use. Tisch Library, Eaton Lab, and Ginn Library will start charging for printing in the summer.

Anita Shreve Talks (Posted March 20, 2003)

An Authors Talk with Anita Shreve, sponsored by The Friends of the Tufts Libraries, will be held on April 1, 2003, from 3:30p.m. to 4:45p.m. in the Hirsh Reading Room of Tisch Library. A reception and book signing will follow.
Anita Shreve, the award-winning author of such novels as The Weight of Water, is perhaps best known for her book The Pilot's Wife, which was an early Oprah Selection. Anita will read from Sea Glass, A Novel, which was published in spring 2003, as well as her latest book, entitled All He Ever Wanted, which is due to be published April 9th.
An exhibit containing the author's works is on display in the Tisch library lobby until the end of the month.
The second Maxine Newberg Gordon, J70, Book Prize will be awarded before the Authors Talk to a mathematics major who has demonstrated a love of reading, literature and poetry.

National Library Week Exhibit (Posted March 20, 2003)

From March 15 through April 30, 2003, an exhibit in celebration of National Library Week (April 6-12) will be on view in the Tisch Library lobby. This exhibit will consist principally of contributions from Tufts students, faculty, administrators, and staff concerning their favorite books, favorite quotations about libraries, and favorite memories and uses of libraries, along with photographs of hometown libraries, submissions that the library solicited throughout the fall semester. Numerous members of the Tufts community responded with varied and interesting contributions that should stimulate viewers of the exhibit to remember favorite books and library experiences of their own. Photographs of library scenes will accompany the texts on display.
A raffle for prizes to exhibit contributors will be held in the Tisch Library lobby on Monday, April 7, at 11:45 a.m.
Tisch Library has sponsored displays and events in honor of National Library Week for the past several years. This year it is pleased, by this means, to give voice to the appreciation of books and libraries arising from the personal experiences and reflections of people at Tufts.

Make Your Voice Heard! (Posted March 6, 2003)

Check your e-mail for a message from the library Director, Jo-Ann Michalak, asking you to participate in the online library survey which Tisch is conducting together with over 500 libraries across the country. The survey was sent out by e-mail on Monday. Reminder e-mails with the survey URL will go out on this coming Monday. Let us know how you think that we are doing.

New Government Documents (Posted February 27, 2003)

Current government publications have been added to the New Books display. The display will feature items that have been cataloged for the Tisch Book Stacks and ones that will be kept in the Government Publications collection in the compact shelving on Level 1.
Tisch Library has been a selective Federal Depository Library since 1898. We receive 42% of what is distributed by the Government Printing Office (GPO). Up until relatively recently, we received items published in print, but with the advent of publishing on the internet, a lot of items are available online from GPO and various agencies. You can access a good number of them from the library's Government Information and Documents webpage.
Contact the Reference Department at 617-627-3460 for further information. If you have in-depth research needs, contact Connie Reik, Coordinator of Government Publications at 617-627-2073 or via e-mail at connie.reik@tufts.edu.

Online User Survey (Posted February 27, 2003)

Look for the e-mail on March 3rd!
As part of a continuing process of self-examination that Tisch Library undergoes in order to better serve the university, the library is participating this year, along with some 500 other institutions, in the LibQUAL+ survey of user satisfaction. The LibQUAL+ survey allows for comparisons to be made across libraries and will provide a sense of how well our library is doing with respect to peer institutions.
The web-based survey, which will run through May 3rd, can be accessed by clicking on a link in an e-mail message sent to students and faculty on March 3rd. It consists of approximately twenty-five questions requiring approximately fifteen minutes to finish and, when fully analyzed, will provide invaluable information on how well our library is serving its users.

Special Library Hours (Posted February 13, 2003)

Monday, February 17, 2003: 10:00a.m. - 1:00a.m.

Times (London) Digital Archive (Posted February 13, 2003)

Researchers can search through the complete digital edition of The Times (London), to retrieve full facsimile images of either a specific article or a complete page. The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching. Data will be added monthly until the entire period of 1785-1985 is available in late 2003.

Serials Vendor Bankrupt (Posted February 6, 2003)

Faxon, the vendor that supplies Tisch Library's as well as the Health Sciences, Ginn and Music libraries' and many other libraries' printed journal subscriptions, declared bankruptcy on January 29, 2003. Most publishers have agreed to continue sending issues while the bankruptcy goes through the courts and until our subscriptions are transferred to another subscription agency. However, we expect that some journal issues may stop.
It is not clear how many printed journal subscriptions will be affected or how long issues for specific titles may stop as a result of the Faxon bankruptcy.
1) In many cases, Tisch receives journals in both print and online editions. If so, the online edition, the e-journal, will continue to be available. Please use the e-journal when available. A complete list of online journals is accessible on the Tisch Library webpage in the "Catalogs & Library Resources" section--select "Electronic Journals".
2) As lapsed subscriptions are identified, a note will be added to the periodical display, and the online catalog will indicate the latest issue as "CLAIMED."
3) If you need an article from a journal which lapses, please complete the "Request an Article" form in the "Borrowing from Other Libraries" section (under "Borrowing and Other Services") on the Tisch webpage. Document Delivery staff will obtain the material for you.
We recognize the problems that the Faxon bankruptcy may create for the Tufts community. Tisch Library staff appreciates your cooperation and patience as we attempt to minimize the disruption to course and academic research.
If you need further assistance, help is available at the Tisch reference desk or by calling 617-627-3460. As more information is received on the status of our print subscriptions, updates will be issued to the Tufts community.

Online Citation Manager (Posted January 30, 2003)

RefWorks is a web-based reference/citation and bibliography manager that allows users to keep track of and download citations from our internet databases/indexes, and then use these references in writing papers and automatically formatting papers and the bibliographies. This software works with EndNote also and is free of cost to the Tufts community. Classes on RefWorks are being offered in Tisch Library on February 27, 2-4pm and March 3, 11:30-1:30pm. Register for a RefWorks workshop.

Anita Shreve Exhibit (Posted January 9, 2003)

The award winning author of The Weight of Water and The Pilot's Wife, Anita Shreve, J68, took part of her inspiration from a photo of a house near her summer home pinned above her writing desk and began imagining people and events to go with its weathered exterior. Anita has said, "I've always been charmed by houses, and descriptions of them are prominent in my novels. So prominent, in fact, that my editor once pointed out to me that all of my early novels had houses on the covers." The photo of the house is on display along with quotes about the house from her various books, which are set at different time periods. The exhibit will be on display in the lobby of Tisch Library from January 10 until April 5, 2003.
The Tufts Community is invited to attend Anita's Friends of Tufts Libraries Authors talk on April 1, 2003, 3:30-4:45pm, in the Hirsh Reading Room in Tisch Library.
