The Tower Café's New Sculpture (Posted May 12, 2005)
The Dranetz Tower Café is a place for students and faculty to come together over shared refreshment. With this in mind, artists Sarah Hollis Perry and Rachel Perry Welty have created "phylactery," 2005,created from over 4000 white hot cups in the shape of a three dimensional speech bubble, suspended from the peak of the Tower Café at Tisch Library.
This modified sphere in the shape of a speech bubble, suspended from the peak of Dranetz Tower, represents the continued conversations and the exchange of ideas that naturally occur in a relaxed and social academic setting.
The very materials of the sculpture, thousands of white paper cups held together with telephone wire suggest communication. Words and ideas of students and faculty seem to rise and collect, filling the space above.
This mother-daughter team both graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2000 and 2001 respectively. Recently, Perry has been working with surveyor's tape and recycled plastic newspaper delivery bags, knitting sweaters for trees. Her outdoor installations may be seen at Brockton's Fuller Museum exhibit "Trashformations" through August 31, 2005 and at the Guilford, (Connecticut) Art Center's exhibit "(re) - creation," May 1 through May 29, 2005.
Much of Welty's work centers on the transformation of everyday objects such as twist ties, cash register receipts, medical records, and messages from her answering service. Until July 31, 2005 her work can be seen in a traveling group show "Over + Over: Passion for Process," currently at the Addison Gallery for American Art in Andover, Massachusetts.
This mother-daughter team's previous collaborative sculpture, "Zeros and Ones," 1998 hangs in the front lobby of Tisch Library, Tufts University.
