Sports Exhibit (Posted December 19, 2002)
Since early in the history of Tufts University, sports have played an important role in campus life. Nearly 800 students take part in sports activities at Tufts every year. Though Tufts is not known as a big sports college, our athletes perform in dozens of sports, and have contributed to college sports history. The long legacy of sports at Tufts has left many interesting and obscure facts. A new exhibit at Tisch Library looks at some of the nearly forgotten traditions and trivia of sports at Tufts. The exhibit will be on display in the lobby of Tisch Library from December 13 until mid-March.

Interactive
Tisch Tutorial (Posted September 26, 2002)
The Tisch Library Tutorial (TILT) is an educational website designed to teach the basics of research sources and skills.
TILT is an interactive tool to teach the basics of conducting research at an undergraduate level. Use it whether you're a beginner researcher or brushing up on your skills to learn how to:
TILT is made up of three modules: selecting source material, searching sources and evaluating sources. The modules can be completed in any order, though there is something to be said for starting at the beginning! Each module should take about 30 minutes and can be stopped and restarted at any time as many times as necessary. Many interactive activities and quizzes are built into TILT in order to evaluate success. The quiz results can be sent to instructors to be used with other data to assess student success.
NOTE: TILT should only be used with Internet Explorer. For more information about TILT, contact Laurie Sabol via e-mail or phone at 627-5167.
Evaluating
Web Docs (Posted September 19, 2002)

For more information on the workshop, or to sign up, contact the reference desk (627-3460 or tischref@tufts.edu).
Banned
Books Week 2002 (Posted September 19, 2002)
A "Banned Books Week" exhibit is on display in the Tisch Library from September 23 through September 30. This event is sponsored by the American Library Association, among other organizations. "Banned Books Week 2002 is the twenty-second annual celebration of the freedom to read. This freedom, not only to choose what we read but also to select from a full array of possibilities, is firmly rooted in the First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of press." (From the ALA Banned Books Week site.)
Again this year, the Tisch Library joins in celebrating this freedom. The exhibit in the library's lobby identifies an "American Top 10" list of novels by American authors that have been banned or challenged.

Humanities
Texts Online (Posted September 5, 2002)
Several full-text primary source online databases were purchased this summer as a result of a concerted effort by Tisch bibliographers to build up electronic resources in the humanities and the arts. A focus group with faculty in these disciplines was held to explore interest in this material. Faculty expressed the desire to have access to electronic primary source databases so that they could incorporate them into their teaching and their students' research. As a result, the Tisch Library recently purchased the following titles, which are available from the A-Z list on the Tisch webpage:
Acta Sanctorum: Collection of documents examining the lives of saints that constitutes a principal source for research into the societies and cultures of early Christian and medieval Europe from the beginning of the Christian era to the end of the 16th century.
Early Encounters in North America: An expanding source of letters, diaries and other accounts of early encounters between Europeans and native Americans from the mid-1600's through the mid 1800's. This resource is fully indexed and can be searched in a wide variety of ways, and should be of interest to historians, anthropologists and environmental scientists.
Early English Books Online: All the extant books, pamphlets, and broadsides published in the English language from 1475-1700 in electronic format.
Patrologia Latina: Works of the Latin Fathers in a fully searchable electronic format. It includes 221 volumes ranging in date from 200 to 1216.
Thesaurus Linguae Graecae: Virtually all ancient Greek texts surviving from the period between Homer (8th century B.C.E.) and 600 C.E. and a large number of texts from between 600 and 1453.
