There is guidance on finding books and articles, with links to catalogs, indexes and abstracts, and electronic journals. This research guide was developed by science bibliographer Miriam Allman, who welcomes your feedback (email).

Waste Not, Want Not: Your Impact on the Environment (Posted October 23, 2003)

Reusing and recycling on an individual basis may seem like insignificant contributions to the environment. However, all influential political and social movements begin with community efforts, and by reducing the amount of throwaway materials we use, and reusing or recycling everyday items made of paper, glass or plastic, we can help save some of the world's most valuable and limited natural resources.
"Waste Not, Want Not: Your Impact on the Environment" complements and promotes campus efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. Sponsored by Tufts Institute for the Environment and Tisch Library, this exhibit displays new uses for materials that would otherwise have been discarded, while also providing informational publications about recycling and its benefits to the modern world.
You are invited to view "Waste Not, Want Not" in the lobby of Tisch Library from November 3, 2003 through February 5, 2004.

History Professor Virginia Drachman, who is also a Tufts parent, will discuss her fascinating book Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business on Friday, October 24th at 3:30 p.m. in the Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library.
An exhibit entitled Venturing Against the Odds: Stories of Enterprising Women is on display in Tisch Library's lobby until November 2nd. The exhibit highlights Professor Drachman's most recent book, Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business, as well as her three previous titles: Sisters in Law: Women Lawyers in Modern American History; Hospital with a Heart: Women Doctors and the Paradox of Separation at the New England Hospital, 1862-1869 and Women Lawyers and the Origins of Professional Identity in America: The Letters of the Equity Club 1887-1890.
A book signing sponsored by Tufts University Bookstore follows the talk.

Resistance, Revolution and Redemption (Posted October 16, 2003)

An exhibit entitled Resistance, Revolution and Redemption: Jay Cantor and the Sixties will be on display in Tisch Library's lobby from October 16, 2003 to January 27, 2004. The exhibit highlights Tufts English professor Jay Cantor's most recent book, Great Neck, the tumultuous story of a group of friends growing up in the idealistic, radical, and romantic sixties and seventies. We enter their lives in 1960 as a sixth-grade class of Great Neck kids -- most of them Jewish -- learns for the first time, in horrifying detail, about the Holocaust, with its moral imperative to "make justice" in the world. Great Neck is the compelling portrait of complex, appealing young men and women shaping and being shaped by the momentous events of their time. The exhibit includes photos and news stories that reflect the experiences of the Great Neck protagonists.
Professor Cantor will give an Authors Talk on November 4, 3:30-4:45 p.m. in Tisch Library's Austin Conference Room. The Tufts Community along with Friends of Tufts Libraries are invited.

A Banned Books Week exhibit will be on display in the lobby of the Tisch Library from September 22nd through October 6th. This marks the 22nd annual commemoration of Banned Books Week (which is officially September 20-27), and again Tisch Library joins in celebrating our freedom to read...and to watch. For the first time, the Tisch exhibit will continue upstairs in the Media Center, where there will be a display of movies that have also been banned or challenged. Please stop by and check it out!
This event is sponsored by the American Library Association, among other organizations that encourage us all to read challenged literary works.

"Breadcrumb" Navigation (Posted September 18, 2003)

The Tisch Library website now makes use of a standard web design convention called "breadcrumb navigation". From each page, users can see not only where they are but also where they've been. Getting to a desired page on a website is often only part of the task before a user. The ability to trace his or her steps back to the point of origin, or to see related pages, can be just as useful.

The exhibit culminates with modern nutrition research being conducted by Tufts Universities and many other research centers. This exhibit will be on display in the lobby of Tisch Library from May 6 through August.
