Have you ever wondered how books are ordered for the library? Did you know that at one time, labels were ironed onto books? The exhibit looks at how acquisitions services have changed over the years, with new processes and new types of material to contend with. This exhibit will be on display until January 31.

A Front Row Seat at the Transformation of Tufts, 1976-2002 (Posted November 18, 2004)

The transformation of Tufts University from a local commuter college to a world-class university through a series of major entrepreneurial actions is the subject of an exhibit installed in Tisch Library lobby from November 17-December 15, 2004. The exhibit is based on a book entitled An Entrepreneurial University, the Transformation of Tufts, 1976-2002 by Sol Gittleman, who came to Tufts as a professor in 1964 and was Provost 1981-2002. As the longest-serving Provost in the history of American higher education, Sol had a front row seat and was a participant in the many changes that occurred in universities during this period as well as what actually happened at Tufts. As an historian, his scope and commentary is both broad and specific.
The exhibit can be viewed from November 17-December 15th in Tisch Library lobby. Exhibit creators are Chris Barbour, Chao Chen, student assistant David Gobiel and Jo-Ann Michalak, with assistance from various Tufts offices.
Sol’s Friends of Tufts Libraries Authors Talk is on December 1, 2004, 3:30-5:00p.m. in Hirsh Reading Room, Tisch Library. The Tufts Community and the public are invited. A reception and book signing follows.

Welcome to the New Library System! (Posted September 2, 2004)

On June 2, the Tufts libraries introduced a new library system to the public. The system will eventually offer the following new services:
  • A new and improved display of holdings information,
  • A more prominent link to electronic journals, making for easier access,
  • The ability to recall checked-out books online,
  • The ability for the library to send all personal notices for holds, recall, overdues, etc., to a Tufts e-mail account rather than on paper,
  • Metafind: Simultaneous searching of many of the libraries' most popular online-accessible databases. Users will be able to enter one search to find resources in several different databases at once.
  • WebBridge: Linking in online databases to the multiple full-text resources the library offers. A WebBridge link in a database like ABI-Inform could take a user to a full-text article in JStor, for example.
  • New authentication methods that do not require users to use their SSN, but rather a UTLN and Trumpeter password.
Target dates for the implementation of these additional services vary, but the libraries will be working to have them all available by the end of the academic year.
Tisch Library staff are excited to be offering these new and improved methods of access. Workshops on the new system will be offered in Tisch on September 15, 20, and 28, 12:00p.m. - 1:00p.m., and September 23, 4:30p.m. - 5:30p.m. To register call 617-627-3460, or register online.

Thanks to the support of President Bacow and Dean Glaser, construction of The Tower was placed on a fast track and is ready for the fall semester.

Tisch Library Café Construction Website Now Contains Photos (Posted July 1, 2004)

This website allows you, our users, to "peek" into the construction of Tisch Library's Café in the Dranetz Tower. The Undergraduate Experience Task Force recommended, "construct a café in Tisch Library to symbolize the library's role as an intellectual center on campus. A place where thinking, reading and discussion can take place in a convivial atmosphere...a fitting place to display faculty books, student art, and other intellectual products of our community..."
With the support of President Bacow, construction of the Café is now underway and is to be completed by August 13th. The Tower is scheduled to open for the fall semester of 2004.

Tisch Library's Microforms Collections: New Technology, Better Access (Posted June 17, 2004)

With the recent acquisition and installation of a new microform scanning software, the microforms collection at Tisch Library becomes more accessible to library users. After scanning, users can save to either a floppy disk or a USB storage device, and if they have a Tufts Trumpeter account, they have a choice to email their microforms pages as an attachment. This free service gives Tisch users the opportunity to save material for future reference and eliminates the expense of printing. For the time being, only one microforms reader has been equipped with the new software, and will be dedicated as a no-print/save and email-only machine.
Café Construction Scheduled for June 1-August 13 (Posted May 26, 2004)
Minimal construction expected in Hirsh Reading Room, corridor to tower and in the Dranetz Tower. The Tower is scheduled to open Fall semester 2004.

New Library Catalog Debuts (Posted May 26, 2004)

The libraries' new catalog debuts on June 2. While basic search techniques remain the same, the Millennium catalog has a new look, particularly in its display of holdings information. The link to electronic journals is more prominent, making for easy access to this important material. One big change on the new system will be that if you have an email address in the Tufts White Pages, you will begin to receive all notices from the new library system for holds, recall, overdues, etc., to your email account rather than in paper. This is in line with existing services like ILLiad and the Virtual Catalog.
The libraries will keep you apprised of any changes to our scheduled debut on the Tufts University Libraries webpage. Please take a moment before June 1 to check the due dates of items you have and renew them if they going to come due soon.
If you have any difficulties using the catalog, please call the reference desk at 617-627-3460. Reference assistance is also available at the reference desk or through a scheduled appointment with a librarian.
