Tufts professors talk research (November 19, 2008)
How do Tufts professors approach a new research topic? Find out in a newly released podcast, recorded on September 30, 2008 during EXP 19 (Research for Success: Using the library for thesis and capstone projects). Veteran professors Dr. Chip Gidney (child development), Dr. Jeanne Penvenne (history) and Dr. Michael Reed (biology) share tips, advice and reflections on their research experiences over the years. After their talks, students asked some very perceptive questions, also recorded.
David Valdes Greenwood Author Talk and Reading on November 12th (Posted: November 4, 2008)
David Valdes Greenwood will read from both of his books, Homo Domesticus: Notes from a Same-Sex Marriage and A Little Fruitcake: A Childhood in Holidays on November 12th from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in Tisch Library's Hirsh Reading Room. He also will treat the audience to a preview of his forthcoming book. Valdes Greenwood, whose resumé includes columnist for both The Boston Globe Sunday Magazine and Bay Windows, frequent contributor to the Boston Phoenix, and accomplished author and playwright, is a Tufts English department and Museum School lecturer.

Peter Levine - Friends of Tufts Author Talk (posted: October 9, 2008)
Peter Levine, the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service's newly appointed Director of Research & Director of CIRCLE, will be the Friends'/Parents Weekend featured speaker on 10/17/08 from 3:30 - 5 PM in Tisch Library's Hirsh Reading Room. Levine's newest book, The Future of Democracy: Developing the Next Generation of American Citizens, focuses on the urgent need for young people to become civically engaged. An exhibit about Levine and the past & future of democracy will be on display in Tisch Library lobby from September 26 - November 13, 2008.

Students! Confused about how to start your senior thesis research? (posted: August 27, 2008)
Come to a preview of EXP 19 (Research for Success: Using the Library for Thesis and Capstone Projects) on Tuesday, Sept. 9 anytime between 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. in Tisch 223. Refreshments will be served.
When: The class runs for eight weeks, beginning Tuesday, September 16. 6:00-8:30 PM, Tisch 223. It is half-credit, pass/fail.
What: Are you thinking about writing an honors thesis your senior year? Would you like to get a head start or immediate help understanding the research process? Would you enjoy sharing what you learn as you become an expert in the subject area you are investigating? This course will introduce students to the major research tools and techniques at an intermediate-to-advanced level specific to their subject area. Each student will also develop a working bibliography of resources, as well as a plan for continuing his/her research.

Regina Raboin is the Science Reference Librarian and Reference Microforms/Current Periodicals Coordinator at Tisch Library.
Laurie Sabol is the Coordinator of Library Instruction at Tisch Library.
Imagining The Elephant Book Reception (posted: July 28, 2008)
Christopher Vaughan's biography details the life of Allan Cormack, Tufts University professor in the department of Physics from 1957-1994 and a physicist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1979 for his pioneering contributions to the development of the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scanner. Book reception will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in the Austin Conference Room, Tisch Library, Tufts University from Noon - 2 pm.
Tisch receives Graduate Student Council Service Award (posted: May 20, 2008)
Tisch Library is proud to have received the 2008 Graduate Student Council Service award! This award is presented to those staff, faculty, groups, or graduate students who have made extraordinary contributions to graduate studies and to graduate student life at Tufts.
The announcement from the Graduate Student Council reads: “Through focus groups, pilot programs for extended library hours, encouragement of graduate participation in the formation of Tisch’s strategic plan, and a host of other avenues, Tisch Library has shown time and time again that it sees graduate students as an important and vital constituency that should be listened to.”
The staff of Tisch Library deeply appreciates this recognition. Over the past fiscal year, the graduate student community has been a particular focus of our outreach efforts. US Presidential Elections Exhibit(posted: April 2, 2008)
A new exhibit is on display in the Tisch Microforms and Current Periodicals Department. It showcases the front pages of the New York Times after the United States presidential elections, arranged in chronological order beginning from the 33rd president, Woodrow Wilson, in 1916 to the 55th president, George W. Bush, in 2004. This display illustrates the evolution of the US presidential race through the century. The newspaper selections were obtained from microform MFR1, which is a comprehensive collection of the New York Times newspaper from 1851 to the present. Tisch Microforms and Current Periodicals department is proud to house these essential archives.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm in Tisch Library's Hirsh Reading Room for the fourth John Holmes Memorial Poetry Reading featuring Maxine Kumin, prolific prize-winning poet and author. Ms.
Kumin’s work embraces themes ranging from religious and cultural identity; the relationship between humankind and nature; the relationship between men and women; love, loss, and survival; aging and mortality to political choices and consequences. The Maxine Newberg Gordon Book Prize ceremony will precede the reading. A book signing sponsored by the Tufts bookstore and a reception will follow.

We invite you to attend final project presentations of
students in Tisch Library's class, EXP 19 (Research for Success: Using
the Library for Senior Thesis or Other Capstone Projects).
The projects are the culmination of this 8-week course.
Students will discuss their research topic, lessons learned
in the class and will review the annotated bibliography they
developed for the thesis or other major research project.

Hear panelists from Boston University, Brandeis University, Roxbury Community College and Tufts University discuss their experiences with Blackboard/WebCT, Moodle, Sakai, and the Spark suite of communication and collaboration tools.

Tufts Professor, Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, the featured Authors Talk speaker, will discuss his book, Amerigo: The Man Who Gave His Name to America on February 13, 2008 from 3:30 – 5 PM in Tisch Library’s Hirsh Reading Room. Discover Amerigo Vespucci’s explorations, vocations, and influences; discover the route that led to the naming of the Americas after an obscure Florentine explorer.
