The Bernstein Media Center is located on level 3 of Tisch Library. The center provides a circulating media collection and screening facilities that support video, film, slide and data projection. The Media Center has a lab equipped with twenty-four media carrels available for walk-in use. All users must present a current Tufts ID card in order to borrow Media Center materials. The Media Center is open most hours the library is open.
The phone number for the Media Center desk is 617-627-3078.
Current teaching faculty, employed staff, sponsored visitors and students actively enrolled in a Tufts University degree program can borrow circulating media materials for use outside the Media Center. All other borrowers can use media materials in the Media Center lab.
Loan periods for Media Center materials vary depending on the type of material and status of the user. Current faculty, staff, enrolled students and sponsored visitors can borrow visual media for 3 days unless the item is on reserve. All other borrowers can use visual media for 4 hours in the Media Lab. There are no renewals for Media Center materials.
Media materials that are returned to the Media Center after the due date incur overdue fines. Charges are posted to the user’s library account when the materials are returned. Library users can pay media charges at the Tisch circulation desk. Cash, checks and points plus are accepted as payment. Below is a list of media overdue fines:
| Media Material | Daily Fine |
| VHS | $1.00 |
| DVD | $1.00 |
| Laser | $1.00 |
All Media Center users are responsible for replacement fees for lost, damaged or unreturned media materials. Replacement fees are posted to the user’s library account. Media Center users can resolve these charges at the Tisch circulation desk. Cash, checks, points plus and Interdepartmental Requisitions (IDR) are accepted as payment.
Arts, Sciences & Engineering (AS&E) faculty can place items from the media collection on reserve in order to make required materials available to a large number of students. Information on current media reserve materials is provided online. All users must present a current, valid Tufts ID to borrow Media Center reserves.
Instructors can submit reserve requests for media materials using an online request form, by e-mail to Tischmedia@Tufts.edu, or in person at the Media Center desk. Online forms and e-mail submissions are sent directly to media staff for processing.
The University’s Policy on Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials advises the Tufts Community to be mindful of copyright restrictions imposed by the copyright laws as well as the rights conferred by the fair use exemption to the copyright laws. We are expected to comply with these laws. A Fair Use website supplies guidance in compliance by providing the policy on fair use, pertinent FAQ’s, statutes and guidelines, links to other fair use websites and tutorials.
All reserve media materials are used in the Media Lab only. All media reserve materials are checked out to users for 4 hours.
Media reserve materials that are returned after the time due incur overdue fines at the rate of $1.00 per hour. Overdue fines for reserve materials are higher than fines charged for late return of other Media Center materials because of the high demand for reserve items. Charges are posted to the user's library account when the material is returned. Library users can pay reserve fines at the Tisch circulation desk. Cash, checks and points plus are accepted as payment.
